  • I have a serious question re a collection I keep in my house. I would like to read your thoughts on this issue.

Keeping it short (leaving out a lot of details), as a child, I wanted desperately to be black. I thought that if I ate and drank enough chocolate, I would grow up to be black. Most of my dolls were black. Well, that didn’t workout.

Just before we moved from CA to MS, I came home from playing to find Mother burning up all my black dolls. Over time, I have collected some black dolls and figurines. They are here and there around my house.

I have sets of two black male chefs and two black maids. They are displayed above the coffee nook, with (now, don’t get bent out of shape about this!) a burned Confederate flag. I never gave them a second thought, that these items may be offensive. No friends ever said anything.

But recently, a black man I didn’t know came to our house to put in a different cable and Internet service. Suddenly, I was very nervous, thinking these items over.I wanted to go hide everything.

He was so nice, didn’t seem offended, and we enjoyed the chatter with him as he worked. But! I worry that I offended him. No, I explained nothing, said nothing.

What do you think? Is my collection offensive to you? Should I hide everything but maybea couple items? Hide everything?
I hope no one takes this the wrong way but, the way things are these days... That might actually cause more people to like you instead of being offended by it..

I do understand what you mean, I think this is what can happen over time when old
age and difficulties creep up on us.

As ive been looking after my aunt and had to deal with her going in and out of
hospital, wondering if should would die each time. It’s made me look around at all the
stuff, both from a practical point if I end up losing the house, also from a realisation
that must of it was useless and had no real worth.

So every so often I have cleared out the junk, worthless stuff. I keep things which have sentimental
value. I feel a lot better for doing this. It’s given me piece of mind, it’s easier to manage the
house and it’s made me realise most stuff we accumulate is of little value compared to the
value of things like life, friendship, family, etc. :)

Its still nice to have teddies though!

a really good Post, Miri, also a mature one!

we did most of our 'getting-rid-of-stuff', when we were in our30's & 40's,,,
the liberation, plus being led by The Holy Spirit, is beyond words,..

there's really just no way for anyone to understand, unless they have
been there, done that...the powers that rule this world are always hungry
to capture one away from their Maker, the Giver and Taker of all we should'
possess, at some point in a Christian's life, He will make it very clear of what
He gives and wants you to have, as opposed to what the world offers and entices with...
