this is going to seem like a strange question, but what happens when you go to bible study? do you have to answer questions? are you put on the spot? do you have to do tests? I received a booklet today about attending bible study, and I've wanted to find somewhere for a while, I just have no idea what goes on

Well, how a bible study is ran depends on the ones hosting it. Some it may be ran more like a small church service with one individual teaching. I've seen some that bring in music for a short praise and worship, but not most.
Some of them are more discussions. Perhaps one person in charge just to make sure things stay on track, but not really the sole speaker.
Some the host may have a primary speaker but they may call on people, or open chances for comments or questions or answers, like a school setting.
It really varies. Often times smaller groups tend to be more of a lead discussion while bigger groups tend to have a teacher.

I think Ug answered your questions well, but i want to encourage you for asking them. Far too many people are afraid to ask questions, and in their uncertainty and naivete/innocence/ignorance get roped into strange beliefs or, worse, false pseudo-Christian cults. Acts 17:11 encourages checking everything against the Scriptures. Keep asking the uncomfortable questions! :)

As for what happens in a bible study, if you are in one, and feel uncomfortable about answering a question, feel free to remain silent. A healthy group will respect that, and will also respect "newbie" questions, even if they seem strange. We all started somewhere, with everything yet to learn, and I for one still have a lot to learn.

Ugly is pretty accurate. However, sometime the study can turn out to be little more than being given a hand-out upon which you merely "fill-in-the-blanks" as you locate the correct word in the Scripture they give you to read. Those are almost useless, IMHO.

a Holy Spirit led home-study group in a wonderful experience, if the participants
are truly led'...
there really isn't a 'leader' per say, but a 'community involvement' that makes each
person feel as valuable as the next...this takes exceptional Love and Understanding
of another's feelings which will help to exclude jealously and a feeling of being
un-equal, even if others in the group are much more mature and have been
students of and servants of The Word for many more years than some others,.,.
it's all about learning to Love and Share and Grow in our Saviour's Ways...

Considering the word "study," I think it's safe to assume no tests the first time in. That would come under "studied," past tense of "study."

That said, you might be asked questions. Not often, but it's a possibility. They would be the type of questions you can answer though. Something like, "tell us your name and a little bit about yourself." I've never been to such a study, but I wouldn't rule it out.

They can be like everything Ug said and then some. I've been to many. I don't do well the first time I meet people. (Can't remember anyone's name, can't remember MY name, can't remember how to converse, etc. Ad after the first time, people miss the quiet me. lol) I've never been intimidated by any of them.

Go. Worse that can happen is you only go once. Best that happens is it's great and you learn so much about the Lord.

Some of the bible study groups I've gone to didn't study the Bible. They socialized. It was more like a gripe session or group-therapy session. It wasn't "Spirit led."

Again, it happens. Fortunately, not often, but it does. The only way you'll know is if you go.

The Spirit knows what is most needed at any meeting of God's people. Sometimes it might be a rehashing of the Begats. Other times the whole hour or two might be spent helping some brother or sister with a situation in their lives. Please NEVER let yourself fall into the manmade trap of thinking since you are meeting for an agenda of specific study, that such is always where the Spirit wants to lead you.
