    Default Teachable Moments

"Sometimes where we are is so we can do nothing, but we learn. There were some things to learn from this... including things about yourself. Skip the guilt and take it for what it is. God teaching you" - Ugly (from another thread)

Every now and again...or perhaps daily...God has a teachable moment. On occasion it really stands out. Here's one...

My parents have both passed away. With siblings in close proximity...in any and all situations there was always someone to bounce a question off of and by the time the pressure mounted, we were able to recover with each other.

One day, I walked into a friend's home and found her husband had died. I called 911. That went ok. It was still hard. But hardest was when the daughter came home. She had never dealt with a close death. That was my guilt moment. I knew a way...I didn't share because I didn't realize she did not. She's Christian. That wasn't the problem. She had just never experienced a parent's death and didn't know even where to start. I felt bad later for not realizing it. It's a moment I would have liked to do better. We weren't close. In fact had only met once before that.

In retrospect, I would tell her...
    1. Call the minister and he or she will walk you through and assist you.
    2. Call family and etc...

    --------
Do you have a teachable moment? We don't live long enough to make all the mistakes...we have to learn from others...

Yes I do have a teachable moment. This is my first time of being a parent, and this is the first time of being teens mom. Growing up in other culture, I have many challenging times dealing wiAmericanizedzed teens. For many years I stuck with my belief that children must not talk back in any way for any reason to parents, or else it is considered insolent. Or when they make a mistake, I would make sure the punishment is available. The silent treatment is always part of the game. No explanation required from my end but I required one from them. A lot of nos and don'ts, few yeses and oks. It gave me a headache to think about how to solve this problem. I feel like a failure as a mom.
One day I cried out to God asking Him to teach me how to be a healthy and godly mom. I believe that there is a way to see them changed their behavior. God only said to learn from Him and how He parents me. So I read and dig the Bible and just get the word "Grace" speak so boldly and strongly to me. God shows and gives me grace many times in my entire life, especially when I made mistakes, big and small. And many times I got exempted from the punishments because Jesus took that punishment on behalf of me. He rather said, " your sin is forgiven, don't do it again." I feel that grace saves my life and build a stronger connection with Him. Then God said, "if you want to have a good relationship with your teens, do what I do." After all, relationship is more important than the punishment you give. So, I called my teens and asked for forgiveness. And I learn to give them grace according to Jesus example. God is right, always right. Then, we have a closer relationship and easy access to communicate and to understand each other. It does not stop there, though. We are still learning many more. But one thing I was convicted and believed even more is that God is real. He listens to our prayers and gives us solutions to our problems. All we need to do is to humble ourselves and open our heart and make it teachable.
