What are the pros and cons of having a public instagram profile vs. having a private instagram profile? For anybody with instagram: which one outweighs the other one more? Public or private and why i think i need help figuring out or just opinions in general. Thanks.

I have no idea what either of them are. I must be getting old and behind the times.

It depends on the kind of account you want to create

if you want to make, in example, an account with facts against abortion you could make a public account, so anyone could see it.

I would prefer a private account, so I can control who sees my private pictures.

It depends on you :)

Public
Pros: EVERYONE can see all your pictures that you post.
Cons: EVERYONE can see all your pictures that you post, plus...

Catfishes can steal and use your pictures. Perverts/Stalkers/Pedos etc can access your pictures.

Private
Pros: Only you can control who has access to view the pictures that you post. You will have a restricted audience.
Cons: Limited and restricted audience.

Someone mentioned already that it’s really up to you in how you want your Insta account setup, which is true.

I'd say it depends on what you're posting. If it's a lot of personal pictures then a private setting. If it's more of an expressive posting, such as interests, humor, beliefs, etc... then public.

If all social media is ridiculous... What in the world are you doing on a ridiculous forum then?

Depends on your objective. If you want to post thoughts for the world to see and share, make a public one. If you want to keep in touch with your high school friend who up and moved across the country after graduating, get a private one. It all depends on individual use case. What works better for the purpose for which you are using it?

I want to make it private but i want people to see who i really am (recognizing me) by various pictures but i keep getting likes and followers from strangers and i end up blocking them. So i just want people to recognize me

One thing I've noticed is the in thing keeps changing often. In the last decade or so it was MySpace, then FB, then Twitter, then Instagram, and if I'm not mistaken Instagram is being replaced as the in-thing by some other platform even as you ask this.

I'm old, so didn't get MySpace at all, then I did do FB and got bored with that after a year or two, and joined Twitter to ask a question to a CEO eons ago and never did get an answer.

This is not to say I don't do social media. (Kind of silly to say that since CC is social media. lol) But I had to decide what I wanted to accomplish in the doing of it.

I think you have to decide what you want to accomplish on Instagram to get the right answer for you.

Ends up, I went back to FB for a very important reason. I'm really not a phone caller kind of person, but I desperately needed to get hold of some people. Hubby's family. They are more modern than I am, so got into that whole get-a-new-phone-every-few-years thing, and stopped using their old phone. Quite a bit of a problem, since I needed to tell them their brother had a heart attack. I did tell them, on FB.

Now FB is where I go to see how family is doing. And, yeah, no one really tells how they're doing on FB, so I just see the good side. (Pictures of kids, pets, foods, scenery, and birds.) But seeing them, means I know they're okay. (And, I just found out an old friend died through FB, so no guarantee what is happening if I don't see them.)

And Twitter? Ended up doing something completely funky with Twitter. I joined in with a community of people who post as their stuffed animals and with fellow writers. The two connect with me since, yeah, I post as my teddy bear too, as well as me-the-writer. I'm surprised how many stuffie-posers/posters have their own books, so looks like a built in community of like-kind (nuts) like me.

I don't know Instagram. I may never know Instagram. But, your answer is directly related to what you want to post on it. Do you want the world to know you and attack you if they even somewhat disagree? (And FB during the last Presidential elections really helped me learn who were friends and who weren't.) Or do you want to connect with those you trust?

You need to figure out why you're on it, and then you'll know your answer to what you should do.

^ Pretty much this. If you want to just post personal pictures and information, make it private. If you want to promote yourself and/or make it like a vlog make it public.
