Hey y'all!

The thread title is the title of a book that was in the library of my high school. It was published in 1972 and described the tactics of the advertising industry.

So my thread idea is this: What are some commercials you find annoying, weird or incredulous? They can either be ads for specific products or services, or they can be general tactics and methods which are used in the industry.

Go!

Marketing! My passion in life, so I'm all about bad ads vs. good ads.

Election primaries coming up, so we're being inundated with political ads. I really didn't have any choice but to vote for Trump over the criminal that was running on the other side. (And, no matter what you think of her, she is a criminal. She threatened rape victims that her husband raped. That's a crime.) The Democrats are putting on a show on how much they care by advertising against Trump. So, nope, not voting for them, because they're lying. On the other hand the Republicans are lying about each other to get the vote, so won't vote for either of them either.

I'm going to vote against the propositions from our city government, (all about "needing" more money for stuff that they've already screwed up, so voting against them "needing" more money), without voting for any candidate. PA has been gerrymandered just right, so we just became a Democratic state. They won even before the election.

Most hated ads? The ones where it comes down to "buy our product, because you're just as much an idiot as these people."

Most loved ads? The Geiko! And yet, I'm never going to buy that insurance because it cost a lot more than what I already have.

They've lost any ability to create ads that make me want to buy what they're selling.

Ads are evil. All ads are annoying that's why I don't watch tv anymore. I was addicted to home shopping network before and I bought some useless stuff. They are really good at scheming to separate you with your hard earned money. There is a particular ad that I find irritating. Its the trivago ad.

Do you get streaming where you live? Because we now watch most TV through streaming old TV shows on Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu. (Going to drop Amazon next September.) So, the only commercial is at the beginning of the show, and it's advertising for another show on that service. (At least, they're not trying to part us from more of our money. lol)

As for shopping channels? We learned how to stop buying useless stuff. Stop watching shopping channels. lol

And what about Trivago irritates you?

I am thinking of buying a smart tv so I can watch shows with no ads instead of watching on my phone. I only have an old prepaid cable tv. I have no idea why I get irritated by the trivago ad. Maybe because of her fake accent.

Yup I kissed home shopping goodbye. Lol

My family & I are in the habit of muting the TV during commercials. It's amazing how little effect they have on you without sound. Sometimes I'll watch a funny commercial, like Flo from Progressive or those two gals in the DriveTime commercials in the Approved van. Also, we have a local car dealership owner who dresses up in disturbing costumes for his commercials and acts out ridiculous skits. Some of his ads are just hysterical. LOL ;)

I dislike those booze ads where everyone seems fantastically happy & in their right minds, they all could pass for runway models, and they're all best buds with one another. That scenario is the complete opposite of real life drinking holes. In fact, most commercials don't portray anything close to reality. Reality doesn't rake in the big bucks, I guess. :p

I wonder why ad producers think deception is the best way to advertise?

I hate all the drug commercials.

1 outta 3 gets some disease. 65% of baby boomers will get some other malady.

The anti depressant ones encourage ppl to continue taking non working meds just add another???

If the first were effective there would be no need to add another.

It's like they are advertising to create symptoms or make you go get tests for everything under the sun.

All about the $$$$$$.

Rant is over. =-)

I hate most commercials, because they seem to be trying to insult everyone-as if that would somehow make people want to buy things. One of my favorites was the Geico commercials, where the last thing you'd hear would be saved 15% or more on car insurance. All I heard was moron car insurance.
