This is going to sound insensitive but theres no point in them putting there own lives in danger whne the guy obviously wanted to kill himself.

They have every right to go home to their families, and should be precautious to do so. If you feel they did something wrong, perhaps you should pray for them. More than likely, they need our prayers right now. I imagine it hurt them to watch that.

Please understand.. i dont mean this to be cold or uncaring... but there was nothing they could do. If you see someone jump into a pit of hungry lions,, you gonna jump in after him??

I'm wondering if anyone actually read the article so I'll reiterate some points.
He waded in to the water. And others watched from shore. The point of the article, is that they didn't go in because there were not the funds to train them in water rescue so nobody bothered. It was too shallow for a boat. Interesting though, that someone was able to pull his body to shore only after he died.

Anyway, I just posted something that I thought was sad, I'm not going to further argue why I feel that way, my opinion has not changed.

‘Handcuffed by policy,’ fire and police crews watch man drown - Yahoo! News

This sickens me, Not one person said heck with policy and tried to save this man, and what kind of policy is that anyway? And the man who went into the water to end his life, likely his last thoughts were.. wow, I was right.. no one cares.
I read the article, and I have to say I am on your side on this.

People are suicidal because of desperation and feeling like they have nowhere to turn, and noone cares about their existance.

There were other people standing on the shore besides those in official status. Did not one person have a conscience?

And like Hethr pointed out.....they did not seem to care about getting wet, or going home to their families when it came time to drag his dead body out of the water AFTER they stood there and watched drown.

I can understand to a *certain* degree contemplating going in (depending on currents etc) when the person may fight you because they are handcuffed and scared of consequences etc. BUT, to stand there and watch them sink below the surface??

I'm sorry....I am totally with you on this one Hethr.

(also, on the flip side, they say that they did not go in the water because none of them had been trained in water rescue etc because of budget cuts.....how many of those men stood around for that ( I don't remember the exact time frame...was it 90 min.?? I am sure that the money that was spent for the numerous people standing around watching this all go down could have paid for at least 3 maybe 4 people to be trained in water rescue. But this sort of *rescue* did not even require diving certification or anything like that. I required someone willing to not stand by and watch another human being die by drowning before their eyes in about 4.5-5 feet of water.)

A young woman tried to kill herself by drinking Clorox. When I arrived she was sitting on the floor next to a big puddle of her own vomit. While trying to help her she grabbed the jug of clorox again and attempted to consume more of that junk. Kneeling at her side I wrestled the jug out of her hands but in doing so I lost my balance and landed in her vomit. I was ticked off at the moment but looking back I'm glad she lived to see another day. That was years ago and I can only pray she is well today.

It happened in San Francisco so I am not too surprised. Sickened by it, yes...surprised that no one in SF helped him...not really.

Wow you did the right thing! You probably have saved her life. Poor girl must have been in terrible pain after that.
