I definitely can see your concern, especially if you come from a church that doesn't have a charismatic culture. This is one of the reasons I would suggest you do your research before-hand on what the ministry doing the sozo session believes.
Sozo is primarily supposed to deal with what the demonic realm can attach themselves to in your life, like fear, unforgiveness, sexual immorality, pride, etc... These are major things that if held onto actually invites the demonic into people's lives and often even gives the demonic permission to be in that person's life. Sozo focuses on removing hinderances to hearing God and receiving from God in the person's life. They focus on connecting with the Father, and healing any wounds from the past that would give you an inaccurate view of Father God, they then focus on any wounds making it hard to connect to Jesus, then the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the one who directs the direction the sozo team members go with each session and each person. Really they just ask God, where do we start, and allow Him to elaborate throughout the session.
Romans 12:2(NASB)
12And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
The ways of the world include thinking in any fashion contradictory to the way God thinks about you, about Himself, and about others. How you think will dictate the possibilities you limit yourself to and what you allow God to do(He doesn't violate your free-will) in your life. God is trying to get us to leave behind our disappointments and pain, so we can live lives of freedom. We can only "prove what the will of God is" if we are positioned to take action as He would because we think like He does. The Bible tells us that we should have the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16). But any thoughts we have that are in conflict with His thoughts hinder us from being a part of God's will. Most of these thoughts are things we learned from the past and are sub-conscience because we have accepted them for so long that they are automatic reactions to our environment. These thoughts are habitual and often don't even enter our conscious thought. Regardless they are still problems, because they are in conflict with God's thoughts and only God knows what these agreements and thoughts we have made are.
The word SOZO comes directly out of the Bible
SOZO is the Greek word translated “saved, healed, delivered.”
SOZO contains the whole package of being made whole or well.
Salvation
“That if you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead you shall be saved (sozo).” Romans 10:9
Healing
“But Jesus turning and seeing her said ‘Daughter take courage your faith has made you well (sozo) and at once the woman was made well (sozo).” Matthew 9:22
Deliverance
“And those who had seen it reported to them how the man who was demon-possessed had been made well (sozo).” Luke 8:36
This is where the idea of sozo came from.
The question was asked: Why are many Christians still not sozo'd?
So some Christians got together and prayed asking God for insight, went into the Word of God, shared their deliverance experiences and compared them, then got together and put things together.
The conclusions they came to was:
1. Biblically the demonic has no legal right to manifest in or on Christians.
2. Demons still are able to somehow
3. There must be a better way to do deliverance and we need to pray to God to figure it out
So, they finally got some insight into the whole process through prayer and the practical experience of those who have done a lot of deliverance ministry. SOZO was the result of this.
As I said before SOZO sessions attack the things the demonic can attach themselves to in your life. If you eliminate all these things (fear, pride, unforgiveness) etc, then the demonic can't manifest in a person's life because all of their authority over that person becomes negated. The only way to accomplish this through Jesus, from Father God, Jesus , and Holy Spirit.
SOZO ministry is never supposed to consult any other divine help, only from God. So that will be a key component to figuring out if a ministry is legitimate.
There is much more, but hopefully this clarifies things a little.
Blessings,
Machew
