Have you ever tried to argue in a whisper? It is equally hard to argue with someone who insists on answering gently. On the other hand, a rising voice and harsh words almost always trigger an angry response. To turn away wrath and seek peace, choose gentle words.

A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare (Proverbs 15:1).

It says a gentle answer, not to be silent. Although, silences may help, if you cant give a gentle answer. Proverbs 15:1 says, A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. I may not always be able to give a gentle answer. that's when i also need to learn to sit still and shut up....lol.

Was just talking about this with some ladies a couple of weeks ago. A man will listen more intently to a whisper than to a shriek.
