My father used to pick them up, stopping for someone based on his first impression of them ("Are they an ax-wielding murderer? Hm..").

Would you ever do so? I would only do it if I had a male friend or family member with me in the car, as I am small and don't look menacing at all.

Side question: Have you ever hitch hiked?

I used to go to college 100 miles from home. Sometimes I would hitchhike home for a weekend.

I don’t pick up hitchhikers, though. Don’t have much opportunity to.

I'd never dare that, been too many hitchhikers that end up robbing the driver, or worse.

I have picked up hitchhikers, as well as being picked up quite a few times while hitchhiking myself. My dad and I were taking a trip out to California from Ohio on interstate 70. While passing through Colorado we seen a hitchhiker and picked him up. He was heading for Reno, Nevada and since we weren't going to drive a few hundred miles off course, we dropped him off in Las Vegas. He rode with us for about 7 hours altogether through Colorado, Utah, and then Nevada.

I would never recommend to a woman picking up a hitchhiker, especially if it is a man. The simple fact that men can usually physically overpower most women without using weapons should be enough to deter you from picking them up.

In Norway?

I ask because I have been to Norway on different occasions (admittedly not in the last number of years) as I have friends just north of Bergen and always found the Norwegians on the whole very friendly and welcoming.

I live in part of the UK (N Ireland) were from 1969 onwards (even to date, although on a lesser scale) there was continuous civil unrest, rioting, shootings, bombings, hi-jackings and other evil acts, so due to these circumstances I rarely picked up hitchhikers, maybe on the very odd occasion and when I did only if they were female...

Can't really call that a double standard either, as even statistically, females are far less inclined to commit the more violent crimes.

See_KING_Truth: Sounds like a one of a kind adventure! I think back to the "olden days"- you know, Little House on the Prairie style living. I wonder, if it was safer to pick people up back then.

I probably would pick up hitchhikers although, like resurrection33, I rarely get the opportunity any more. I suppose what would ultimately sway me would be the thought, "What would have happened if the Good Samitaritan had decided to 'not get involved'"?.

Just me, though. I understand anyone's reluctance in today's world.

^ Sorta a bystander affect, yeah. It's hard to tell when the right moment to take that "chance" is.

I have in the past picked up hitch hikers, in fact the last time was just last year and he insisted I take $40.00 when I dropped him off for my time and gas. I would do it again if the opportunity arose, but I am kind of causious about it.

Have I ever hitch hiked? Yes in my youth I have, but not in a long time.

I'm from Romania and it's pretty common to hitchhike here. When I told some American friends that I'm going to hitchhike they were terrified lol. I think it's safer here, less psychos.

Only if I really felt convicted to. If I can't trust people with my place in line, though, I'm not quick to trust them with being in or near my car.

And no, I don't think I'd ever hitchhike.

The time I spent on the streets I would have to hitch hike to get anywhere. Most hitch hikers although unclean and misunderstood truly are just looking for a ride. I'd actually try to use hitch hiking as a great way to talk to people who picked me up about God while I was at it. I like to think of it this way. That person needs someone to shine their light and that's what we are called to do. I''m not saying recklessly pick every last one up. Just let Jesus take the wheel sometimes and give a poor person a ride. :)

My mothe- in-law lives on a small Island, and most people pick up hitchhikers, because everyone knows each other.
And a lot of people don't have cars. My husband's nephew works at the grocery store on the Island 30min away, he stands at the end of his driveway
waiting for someone who is going to the store...that is how he gets his rides every day.

Where I live I never see hitchhikers...and if I did...I don't think I would pick them up.
I might offer my cell phone, So they could call someone for a ride.

I love hitch hikers. I used to pick up hitch hikers all the time. I don't drive my bus anymore, so not really an option.

I hitch hike every once in a while. Meet some dope people that way!

Most Americans would picture you being overtaken by werewolves and vampires. Maybe Vlad himself.
