My oldest memories til i was about a teen i only had bad dreams and nightmares. Once i hit my teens i started having more varied dreams, but was still frequently having bad dreams, especially after i got saved. One period in particular started getting bad, i'd be so tense i'd pray that God would protect my dreams, and me. And no more troubles that night. But the next night i was back to having bad dreams. Eventually i started praying specifically about my dreams before i went to sleep. It worked. I kept that up for a while and eventually i no longer had to relay that kind of prayer every night.
Weird as it may sound, also be cautious of what you eat before bed. Some foods can cause bad dreams. Or, are you on any prescription meds? Some medications can cause bad dreams, especially when starting or stopping them.

if it gets bad, it could be some kind of sleep paralyzis (it often related to "night terrors").

Agree with what Ugly has said. Also, stay away from caffeine.

I've had dreams where something bad was happening and I called out to God in some form or manner and the dream ceased.

I honestly don't know how easy/hard that may be for you to do, but you could try that as well. I suspect you may yield the same results.
