In the ancient world, the sun was called the "greater light" and the moon the "lesser light." People believed that the moon produced its own light. Now, of course, we know that it does not -- it only reflects the light of the sun. The "phases" of the moon are not times when parts of the moon are missing: the quarter, half, or 3/4 are still there, just hidden in its own shadow from the sun.
We are like moons. Jesus is the Light, the greatest Light. Not one of us can produce light by ourselves, but what we can do is reflect the light of Christ. And we do that to the best of our ability. Sometimes our own human failings cause us to shade that light, so that we stand in our own shadow of sin. But sometimes we can shine so bright you could read a book by our light.... Though, of course, nothing compares to the Sun. Or the Son.
