Jesus made wine (john 2). Paul said to Timothy (I Tim 5:23). But not to excess (Eph 5:18 for example, and many other places). Some voluntarily gave it up, included in the Nazirite vow.

Personally I can't stand the stuff. But Scripture says what I quoted for you above.

I also have it on the authority of a good German old folk song (that's inspired, right! - sarcastic groan here): "In heaven there ain't no beer, so that's why we drink it here."

Drinking as in soda, water, wine. Sure why not, but drinking as in Alcohol to a point where you don't remember what you did. IT TOTALLY BAD.

You don't have to 'not remember' for it to get to a bad point. Drinking, if your are of LEGAL age, is acceptable, long as you are not getting tipsy or drunk. If you are underage for your areas acceptable drinking age, then no drinking is acceptable. Or if you are not using it to cope with stress.
But, personally i stay away from it. It is so easy to slip into overdoing it, or into alcoholism. I think the bible puts it best when it says in 1 Cor 10:23
You say, "I am allowed to do anything"--but not everything is good for you. You say, "I am allowed to do anything"--but not everything is beneficial.
Or, as i like to put it 'just because you can do something doesn't mean you should'.

Wine is the only alcoholic beverage spoken of in the New Testament. John 2:1-11 - Jesus and his disciples are invited to a wedding and when the wine runs out Jesus turns water into wine by performing a miracle. Some believe that this wine was non-alcoholic. We know this was real wine because the steward congratulated the bridegroom on departing from the custom of serving the best wine first. Instead he served it last. The qualiy of the wine is in the grapes and the aging, which results in the alcohol content. Since no grapes were used in Jesus' miracle, the quality was in the aging or alcohol content.

We are told in Ephesians 5:18, And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit. It is not a sin for Christians to drink. I personally believe it's not wise! Some people canmnot drink without falling into excess. And then there's the issue of your testimony.

I simply don't drink so as not to encourage others who might fall into excess. I also don't want to offend another Christian and be a stumbling block to them. So, in all wisdom, I will remain free of alcohol. I would rather be filled with the Spirit anyway.

BUT, Pleeeeease, be kind and do not post a thread on the horrors of drinking Diet Pepsi and Crystal Light.

It should also be noted, PaigeyStorm, that if it's illegal for you to drink alcohol where you live (maybe because of your age...I don't know how old you need to be to drink where you live) then it is always sinful.

Romans 13:1-2
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

Ask, can you glorify God through drinking? Will it help in your walk with the Lord? Consider the effects alcohol has on the mind. God wants to use us for His Kingdom purposes, so we need to be able to listen when He speaks, and not drunk that we cannot hear Him. It's good to be under the influence of the Holy Spirit at all times, and not under the influence of any drug/alcohol.

I believe drinking in moderation is fine. Growing up my family celebrating many things by getting together and getting plastered. As a young child I remember my mom and aunts boozing it up in the dinng room while all of us cousins were made to watch movies and crash on the living room floor so they didn't have to drive home. As a teenager I saw my brothers stumbling drunk all the time. I saw my mom drink and laugh at what she considered my lightweight brother. I saw alcohol poisoning and broken friendships all because of irresponsible drinking.
I had my first drink when I was 21. Since then I have never had more than one alcoholic drink at any one setting except for one time. I was doing house ministry at an Armenia couples home. Culturally, they drink with meals. I was never drunk and I was among fellow ministers. In any other circumstance, no matter how unaffected I feel, I will never have more than one drink. And I also only have that one drink a few times a year when I'm at a party or out with friends.
One thing I'm aware of is who I'm drinking around. There are certain people who are just not safe to drink around no matter how sober you are. We should avoid tempting some people. We should also in some cases demonstrate how to do it responsibily.

As I said before I'm not really a drinker. But I've been in just a couple situations where I guess I was buzzed. I'm not really sure since I dont drink enough to really know the lingo. I can feel just one sip of hard liquor. I dont mean I'm drunk after a sip, but I'm very aware of how I feel. At one work party I was drinking my one margarita which really wasn't that good. I just wanted to finish it so I chugged the last 1/4 c or so. I realized later that the reason it wasn't ood was because I was drinking melted ice at first. When I got bored with it, the last 1/4 c I chugged was pure tequila. Oops... It was embarrassing. No one knew how I felt, but everything was spinning. I even tested myself by walking towards a mirror. I couldn't walk straight. I was very conscious of what was happening and I texted my husband at the time. He just laughed at me. I had no intention, but on an empty stomach I chugged pretty much a 1/4c of pure
Tequila. I never want to do that again!

Well ive been at both ends of the spectrum and abstaining from alcohol isnt a lifestyle I can lead, but neither is going out everynight of the week and getting drunk. Ive tried both in my day. As long as you are of age and can drink responsibly, then I don't see a problem with it. Know your limits, know who you're around, and be safe.

Drinking alcohol is a sin, period. I know there are those quote Scripture about wine in the New Testament. Those quotes are mostly misused. Look at this website where someone did a lot of digging to show us about the "wine" of the New Testament. Jesus And Wine - by Chris Wilhoit

Paul told Timothy to drink a little wine for stomachs sake. The reason it wasn't prohibited then was because it was non alcoholic. Now, distilleries add sugar and yeast to great juice to ferment it to and the alcohol. Common wine for household use was great juice..... That's why their kids could drink it. if it didn't have the proper ingredients, aging it would not make it more alcoholic, it would make it acidic. Get a bottle of Welch's, and let it sit for year. I promise you, you won't be able to drink it.

Drinking can become a stumbling block. Should a person become drunk they may fall back to slavery of alcohol and/or worldly lust. If not for ones self then perhaps to another of weaker faith, who may become encouraged to do the same. If one cannot avoid these blocks for stumbling then one should not drink.

Ephesians 5:15-21; Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Dear friends,

I would submit that (maybe) the root question we should be asking is, "Why is drinking necessary?" Scripture tells us in many places that "you can't love the world and love God at the same time".

God bless you.

No one ever comes along asking if it is ok to eat rat poison. Probably because no one is
wanting to do it. Its almost impossible for sin to entice people to eat rat poison as something fun to do. Now, too many strongs drinks and that removes the word "impossible." But 9 times out of 10
when someone ask, "Is it ok to.....", they are wanting to do it. What do you tell someone when they
ask? That 10th person just may be wanting an education of the Bible. But what if its a matter
of sin enticing someone like a piece of cheese in a trap to a rat. Telll them its ok to nibble a little bit?
If anyone gives the rat slightest approval, to mess with that cheese, that rat will die because of their
advice. If it is enticing, stay away from it, period. I would even advise people to stay away from the
mild stuff. If it can affect your thinking, it WILL affect your thinking. And that symbolic rat poison,
one would have not messed with before hand, just may seem fun afterwards. That symbolic
rat poison could be something bad, or something more mild as saying something to someone or
about someone, you later regret. Its hard for people to control their mouth to begin with.
Just alter that thinking a little bit and it gets harder.

Well it would appear that Jesus drank. Like I'm not saying he got drunk, which he probably didn't. But he likely had a glass of wine with his meal from time to time. don't believe me...

Luke 7....

33 For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35 Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.”

Plus the water to wine. If he was that much against it he would be more like John the baptist. they've done studies, a drink with dinner is actually good for you. I don't drink that much, but I'm just saying. It's nothing, as long as it's not excessive or overly frequent.

I can take or leave alcohol..my parents never made it a big deal, and I never saw either of them drunk. They grew up where it was normal to have wine with meals, champagne for celebrations, weddings, etc. Personally I enjoy a drink or two if I go out for a nice dinner, or I like to try a different beer from around the world when I play trivia on Thursday nights. I haven't really seen scriptural support for the notion that we aren't to consume any quantity of alcohol at all, but if I'm wrong, I welcome being corrected.

I do see where alcohol is a problem for a lot of people, and I do have a friend where she and most of her family really struggle with alcoholism...really, anything to excess separates us from God when you start idolizing that thing
