Default Do you think masturbation is a sin?

I've thought this over multiple times. And i'm curious of other opinions on here.
I think masturbation is a sin if you're lusting after somebody else while doing it. If you could actually do that, without lusting after someone else, then I dont believe it would be sin. But I also think it's nearly impossible to masturbate without lusting after someone in some kind of way.

But i'd love to hear other opinions.

I agree. There are different kinds of masturbation. And different kinds of people doing it for different reasons. Matt. 19:12. We do not consider that when we are giving opinions.

This comes up disturbingly often... This is what scripture says.

Lev 15:16 And if any man's seed of copulation go out from him, then he shall wash all his flesh in water, and be unclean until the even.
Lev 15:17 And every garment, and every skin, whereon is the seed of copulation, shall be washed with water, and be unclean until the even.
So its not a sin so long as you clean up after.

I also recently wrote a semi pertinent thread on lust.

If there is any sin concerning this topic it would be lust, masturbation itself is nothing. So, knowing what lust means is important.

It probably is. But there are other things about it to consider too.
If you re post this question in the women's only forum, I'll give a more detailed opinion. But out in public I'll just say my short vague answer.

I'm reposting a post I put in a similar thread in the teen forum:

I'm going to ramble a bit, so hopefully this will all make sense.

This is one of those topics that I wish the bible specifically stated whether masturbation was a sin or not, because it would have ended this debate long ago. Now, it is not specifically mentioned so this debate will continue for centuries. I think one can make an argument for or against masturbation and, ultimately, I think it comes down to an individual choice. We can all agree that lusting over someone is a sin, that's clear, but masturbation and lust are not mutually exclusive. One can masturbate while not thinking lustful thoughts. To say that masturbation is always fueled by lust is wrong, one can focus on the physical feeling and not think lustful thoughts about another person.

The other thing is that the bible specifically mentions many sexual sins such as fornication, adultery, rape, bestiality, & homosexuality; yet, masturbation is not mentioned anywhere. There really isn't anything that even eludes to it, so I take it as if it was a sin, it would have been mentioned along with all the other sexual sins that are talked about in the bible. We are all human and at times are going to face having sexual feelings and urges. It is only natural and with many people not marrying into their 30's, what is a Christian to do with those feelings. You can pray about them, yes, but that might not always take them away. So, if a person can masturbate to release that sexual tension in a healthy way without falling into fornication, I don't totally see the wrong in that.

This is similar to me as the thread about tattoo's. I think the issue of masturbation falls into the 'disputable matters' that Romans 14 talks about.

    Under the Law
Matthew 5:28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
One doesn't even have to do the act that is how stringenbt the Law is and Sin under the Law is death
So today: under a new Covenant
1 Corinthians 6:12[ Sexual Immorality ] “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything.
1 Corinthians 10:23[ The Believer’s Freedom ] “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.
    Romans 8:37-39

    King James Version (KJV)

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 14:14I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.
Hebrews 6:9But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.
    Hebrews 11:6
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Romans 3:28Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

This is your desciscion between you and God anything without Faith is sin period

Romans 4:8Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
Mark 12:30And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
Matthew 22:37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Luke 10:27And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
We are today under the laws of LOVE. Again all things are permissable under this new Covenant and each one of us individually decide whatever we are going to do is it beneficial and am I harming hurting my neighbor. A belief in God is a personal belief but just do not destroy your neighboe in whatever you may allow and oyuknowing they do not okay
For me it is not good or beneficial.

Yes its great sin against God its called lust, and is selfish, and self centered, God gave His creation sex to uses in marriage only, but the false church teaches anything goes, but the Lord says differently in His word:

Eph 5:3 For let fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness not be once named among you, as becomes saints,
Eph 5:4 neither baseness, foolish talking, jesting, which are not becoming, but rather giving of thanks.
Eph 5:5 For you know this, that no fornicator, or unclean person, or covetous one (who is an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are clearly revealed, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lustfulness,
Gal 5:20 idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, fightings, jealousies, angers, rivalries, divisions, heresies,
Gal 5:21 envyings, murders, drunkennesses, revelings, and things like these; of which I tell you before, as I also said before, that they who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Saying everyone masturbates, is a generalization because not everyone masturbates. Do some and a lot of them masturbate? Yes. Do they all masturbate? No.

    How can it not be?
How can you not lust during it?
Simple. - (I guess if you do it less than 490 times a day you're alright) - Just a joke.......
    No....of course it's a sin.
Just don't get hooked on it - - - "You are servants to who you yield your members to" - -
(I guess that would make you a servant to you).......cut it out.
    - Oh, but if we fall we have a High Priest who is faithful to hear our pleas and forgive us.
Jesus never did it, ....just saying. Don't make a habit of it.
Grace works two ways you know.
God gives you the grace to overcome.
And when you fall, He is faithful and just to forgive.
But you need to put your body under subjection to not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.
Then you are showing Him you mean business.
(Never look for an excuse to sin)

I think it's a sin. I think God loves you anyways and forgives it. I wouldn't compare it to fornication, adultery, or homosexual acts but many here on CC can't see a difference.

Sin places humanity in hell apart from God's grace but the good news is that Jesus paid the penalty for the whole world at the Cross. When people repent and turn to Jesus in faith, their sins are forgiven. They have become born again and a child of God.

This doesn't mean they completely stop sinning. It does mean they have a new nature that wants to do what is right and please God in addition to their still existing old nature which does not. The two exist in a state of war and will to whatever extent they do until one is united with God.

Some sins are worse than others in both motivation and effects, and should be judged accordingly. Stealing a loaf of bread is vastly different than exterminating a million people. Sins may also differ at their root.

When Jesus spoke of his second coming and judgment, he warned that among those deserving punishment some would "be beaten with many blows" and others "with few blows" (Luke 12:47-48). He also reserved His most fierce denunciations for the pride and unbelief (Matthew 23:13-36).

There is a real difference between someone that goes out partying and fornicating and someone that chooses not to engage in those activities and simply uses a sock before they go to bed to get some relief from a drive that is inherent to their physiology. The first person could care less about what is right and pleasing God while the second person cares a great deal about what is right and their choice clearly reflects that though have not yet found the perfection their new nature desires.

    Outright? No.

But what motivates the action makes it so. Satisfying the flesh, lusting, perverse thoughts... If your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out. He who knows good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

It's a tricky one. I believe it can be done without lusting but I still believe the act is a sin. Only our wife or husband should satisfy us (if we're single, we have to wait until we're married). Sin is sin.

Masturbation and lust are not mutually exclusive. One can focus on the feelings of masturbation without lust ever entering the equation. It is a fallacy to say that masturbation always involves lust. The only way to associate masturbation as a sin is to link it to lust, which is not always involved. Like I stated before, the bible list all sort of sexual sins, if masturbation was such a sin it would be listed along with the other sexual sins. It's not fornication, it doesn't always have to involve lust, and it is not specifically stated in the bible as sin... which leads me to conclude that it is not a sin. Although, if a person thinks it's a sin and does it, then it would be a sin, if he doesn't think it's a sin and does it, then it wouldn't be a sin.

Too many repressed urges can lead to unwanted kinds of sexual dreams for some people. Sometimes you can't win no matter what you do (or don't do). Just saying.

Well, I would agree with you except Jesus said that when a man lusts after a woman he has committed adultery already.
He sort of perfected the law.
