I thought about posting this in the Ladies forum, but I know the male gender can have green thumbs too.

It is about to be planting season where I live. Spring is right around the corner, and I cannot wait for it to be warm enough so I can spend time outside playing in dirt.

I thought maybe that if anyone would like to discuss/trade ideas on planting flower gardens, vegetable gardens and so on we could here.

I guess I will start with my plans/questions.

My favorite flower is the calla lily. They are elegant and simple looking. I have purchased a few tubers already, and plan on buying more. I just don't k now if I could plant small, accent flowers to go with it or plant them by themselves.

Here is a photo of a white calla lily for those who may not know what they look like. They are a very popular wedding flower as well.

What zone(s) do calla lilies do best in? I've been trying to find more bulbs to add to a new flower bed I'm planning, and I didn't even think of lilies. I've got tons of tulips and daffodils, but those are so common around here I'm actually bored with them. Granted, maybe they're common here because not much else will grow :/

What kind of accent flowers were you thinking you might do?

So glad you started this thread- finally something that I actually have a clue about :D

They are best in zones 8-10. They're considered a tropical flower, but will grow in other parts. They do recommend protecting them from the cold though. I am in zone 7, and people around here are successful in growing them.

I don't know what type of accent flowers. Obviously something small. To "fill in the gaps" maybe. A groundcover I guess. I dont want to take attention away from the Calla lilies so I just need something little that will not grow very tall at all.

Hi Elizabeth! I love gardening! Thanks for starting this thread.

Some flowers are so beautiful they don't need an accent. Cala lillies are so majestic and lovely, in my opinion they would look better alone. I have a friend who planted them alongside her house fairly close together like a hedge and nothing else; It looks beautiful and regal. But then when they die...you have a blank spot. Even if you incorporate some elephant ears and hostas these are also seasonal. Maybe interwoven with a couple of evergreen shrubs like boxwood without color or white azaleas and snowdrops or lilly of the valley. Repeating the white and green but different heights and shapes.

I have deer and something else univited that eats bulbs...so gardening has been a challenge.

I have been looking for a corner-tiered, wrought-iron planter that you can nestle that moss lining in to plant some herbs and lettuces in for my deck. Has anyone seen one of these online anywhere?

Let us know what you decide.

We should also post pictures.

I am just going out to weed now; it is still too cold here to plant anything permanent.

Every year I jump the gun and get waaaayyyy too excited about springtime. I buy some pansies or violets knowing full well they wont last. At least I no longer fall for the prim roses :)

Enjoy 'playing in the dirt' everybody.

Oh, rats- I'm technically in zone 4, but I make sure anything I plant is for zones 3 or 4 because we get so cold here. I think we actually have LESS than 100 frost-free days, on average. Makes gardening a challenge, that's for sure.

So, obviously I know nothing about what kind of plants would grow in your area, but for ground cover that wouldn't take anything away from the lilies, maybe something like ivy, or if you want tiny flowers, maybe forget-me-nots?

Wow, now I'm all anxious for spring to get here already...and around here, that might not happen until May!

Do you want something a different color, with white flowers or just evergreen?

You could try white candytuft, it is evergreen and doesnt grow very high. For an annual with lots of bright white impatients would also be a good plant to put at the base. The trick is getting plants that bloom at the same time. When does the Cala bloom? If you want them to bloom at the same time, you have to consider this too. As well as the color, height, zone and growing conditions.

Here are some white / evergreen ideas that might inspire you https://www.google.com/search?q=calla+lily+accent+pics&hl=en&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=_ro7UfPWEomNqQH8soA4&ved=0CDIQsAQ&biw=1440&bih=730#hl=en&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=garden+white+flowers+&oq=garden+white+flowers+&gs_l=img.12...11937.26252.4.28537.46.36.0.0.0.8.168.3654.14j22.36.0...0.0...1c.1.5.img.fYz4DG9zQ24&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.43287494,d.aWM&fp=2399cd1627ef60fe&biw=1440&bih=730&imgrc=k136tVf5NoIJkM%3A%3Bw55v8hRyRCn9NM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fus.123rf.com%252F400wm%252F400%252F400%252Fcarenas1%252Fcarenas10805%252Fcarenas1080500005%252F2996539-there-are-many-white-flowers-in-garden.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.123rf.com%252Fphoto_2996539_there-are-many-white-flowers-in-garden.html%3B1200%3B834

I will post a photo of the area I wan to plant them in to get everyones view. I love gardening, but I am certainly not a pro. I have ALOT of work to do in my yard. I let it go for years because I didn't have time to manage it. Just started getting back to it last year. It will talk alot of TLC to make it look purdy again.

Another thing I am doing is planting poppies around my flagpole. The corn poppy is the flower used in honor of veterans day so I want to kinda to a little patriotic thing there, and right at the base of the flagpole in the middle of the poppies I will plant a purple iris because it is my state flower.
