I've noticed a few rumblings lately about the issue of moderators asking people to change topics in chat. I feel like there is a misperception from some on this issue.

Usually a moderator will ask people to change topics when....

1. A discussion is becoming too heated, so to get control of the situation and stop a fight from breaking out, we request it to be stopped.

2. A topic has been discussed for a very long time and others in the room would like to move on to some thing else.

I'm sure there are other reasons, but those are two of the major reasons.

Please view a moderators request to change topics as a friendly nudge to simply move on because of one of the above stated reasons.

These requests shouldn't be viewed as censorship, stifling of God's moving, a quenching of His word or as some kind of moderator scolding you. It's just a simple, friendly nudge, with no ill or overlord sounding intents.

You shouldn't even chat in fear of a moderator requesting that you change topics, seeing a request to change topics isn't a big huge threat in the first place. You should have a little fear though if you decide to get all huffy about a request to change topics, and start giving a moderator a hard time about it.

I understand why some may view a request to change topics as a scolding, fear inducing, "oh no I'm about to get banned', event. After all, there you are talking about some given subject for a while, you're all comfy on your couch or desk chair, then all the sudden someone who is a MODERATOR steps in and is like, "Yo it's time to change topics."

Being startled by this, your initial reaction might be, "Oh no! Did I do something wrong? Did I break a rule? I got this mod after me about something!!" So yeah, I can see where chatters are coming from.

But you can calm down. There will be no black marks against you if we simply ask that you change topics because it's been going on too long, or the discussion is on the verge of being TOO heated. So please, continue to chat without fear.

But also give us a moderators a break when we step in and ask you to change topics, Usually it's for a very good reason and it's done to keep a good atmosphere in chat. I would hope we have a friendly tone when we ask you to change topics. But if you give us a hard time about it, our friendly tone may change.

That's all. Thanks.

I agree Stilly, I have noticed the same thing.

I think this is summed up quite nicley in rule number 12 of the 'ChristianChat' rules :

12. Please let the moderators moderate.
The chat room moderators are just that: moderators. (They are not just monitors). Please allow them to moderate (i.e., change topics, steer topics, or move discussions to other rooms).

Yeah, so it's not at all negative, it's just something we sometimes need to do!
