I want to know people's opinions about music. Secular music v.s. Christian. Do you listen to only Christian? Do you listen to a little of both? How do you think this affects you and what are is your opinion. Also some bands like P.O.D. who have penetrated the mainstream music scene. What is your opinion on this?

I listen to both. God speaks to me through both. Many non-christian bands/songs I have listened reflected my thoughts and feelings and struggles in ways christians bands can't or won't. As for christian bands in the mainstream, I think that's exactly where they belong.

I listen to about 60% secular music and 40% Christian. I love all kinds of music and I think both secular or Christian music can speak to me in some way. Sometimes secular music has a bit more emotion, more thoughtful reflection on some of the things we go through. Christian music help in lifting me up spiritually and feeding that. So, I think both have their positive attributes. As far as Christian bands who have made it over to the mainstream, I say fantastic! Those are the special bands who can reach people that may be otherwise unreachable.

In the whole I have to say there is far more secular music and from that alot more secular bands and artists which are really good. We also know that alot of 'secular' bands have a variant of different people with different beliefs, so many secular bands have devot Christians and Muslims and other in the band.

I'm not Christian, but I end up liking a lot of artists who are Christian and incoporate Christian themes into their music (Florence + the Machine, Mumford and Sons, Sufjan Stevens, etc). I think there's a really big break between "Christian music" and "Music with Christian themes/messages". Christian music, like worship/praise/whatever stuff I've hated even when I was a Christian. Its the same reason I hate most Christmas songs; I can only hear the same song so many times so often before i never want to hear it again. I think in many cases Christian music is just hollow and vapid; its just singing variations on the same general songs with the same message. Though since I don't listen to it much anymore, this may very well have changed.

But while I may not like praise music and stuff, I still belt out "You've Got The Love" with Florence every time I hear it :p Her cover is just beautiful musically, especially live. Same goes for Sufjan's stuff, it may be about God, but its done super well so I don't mind in the least. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I appreciate subtlety and artistry

But that's just like, my opinion.

I dig everybody's opinion and thank you. It's like weeding out your garden. I have songs I still like and then I have bands I used to love and I can't find one good song on there. I used to love it but now the lyrics contradict what I believe now. In my favorite genre, there are not many Christian bands who do it and the ones who sort of do are hard to find. The music doesn't seem to stay in print. Some of the Crust Punk and D-Beat have lyrics that are directly against God so I can't hang with that. Used to not bother me before I believed but now it offends the Holy Spirit within me. Just like movies or my kids wanting to listen to rap. I have to make them wear earphones. Things that didn't bother me before sure do now.

The whole world belongs to God. I listen to both Christian and non-Christian music - probably 40% non and 60% Christian. The Holy Spirit has encouraged me through non-Christian bands like Florence and the Machine, Nightwish, Evanescence, Within Temptation, Orphaned Land and the like. Often the bands have more variety to their repertoire, both in lyrical content and musical content. I love P.O.D., also Skillet and any number of Christian bands that have crossed over into the mainstream. I'm not big on CCM music but I still enjoy a few artists eg. Rebecca St. James, Barlow Girl. God can and will use anything to bring him glory.

I listen to both. I own tons of secular as well as christian artists. I went through a stage where after I got saved,I got rid of all my secular stuff & only listened to christian music...maybe for about 2 or 3 years. The more I grew & the more I prayed,etc...I just didn't feel it was a big issue anymore. Part of that was the fact I felt God told me to set aside all music & even playing my drums for a season, just because I think I was making music an idol in my life & it didn't matter to God if it was christian or secular,I was putting it before him. Once I had that time away,I came back with a much different attitude towards all music. Personally,I get a bit tired of people saying that this style or that style of music is or isn't of God or the devil. I hate when people give the devil credit for creating anything..he can't create. God made all music & it's up to man what we do with it,how we use it,interpret it...satan can only try to make a perverse copy of it.

Yes, I did the same thing. I had a record as in vinyl collection I had collected for 28 years. Just threw it away. I'm not sad about it. I'm realizing there are things that aren't terrible. For example I love when dropkick does amazing grace with the bag pipes. I like oi music and what is wrong with working class lyrics? But the majority of hardcore I listened to was completely nihilistic and much was against Christianity. I'm figuring things out.

I'm down for hardcore techno or industrial.

I listen to mostly Christian, but i have those secular albums that i still like to pull out sometimes. A lot of stuff i'd like to listen to, but can't handle the lyrics. Especially in the styles i listen to.

Industrial? Hmm... i may have to make another list for you soon, dying, haha. Not much in the hardcore techno area. Christian DJ's tend to do poppy/club dance cheese, or remix trite mainstream Christian stuff. Have to dig hard to find the occasional good stuff. But i'll add that to the industrial list, when i get around to it.

I enjoy making industrial on acoustica beat craft. You can program the beat and also load any samples you want. I haven't done it since I was saved though so I did a bunch of songs with samples from that old movie from 1983 called suburbia and samples from that indie film slackers. It's interesting stuff. My favorite quote was, " suburbia, they don't know all these new houses are the slums of the future." Just ridiculous stuff like that. I should try and do some Christian industrial. You can immolate hardcore techno on that program also.

I'd like to learn how to do electronic music. Like to take the crazy crunch of deep drop dubstep and mix it with hard styles like speedcore, terror type stuff. Though i'm not as familiar with these styles as i'd like, since most of the secular stuff is trash filled, and Christians don't do much. This sounds familiar... hmm...

That's all the more reason to do it. Clarify speedcore and terror? Is speedcore fastcore like magrudergrind or terror like the hardcore band terror?
