Hey!

I am just curious on what your thoughts, experiences and ideas about mental health are. Do you feel meds are a good thing God has allowed us to use so many can lead very fulfilling lives or no?

Just asking what the general consensus is. thanks!

Everything seems to be mental health nowadays or "mentally disabled" is a term used for basicly anyone...

People with posttrauma stress labelled as mentally disabled and out cast of society and people been raped, molested etc told they delusional and mentally disabled.
Specially when it educated people known in society and well known names... (some of its been peep showed in media but only hinted)

Theres organised crime, identity theft and educated hells angels that thrive on "mentally disabled" label.
Yes you may be suprised how educated they may be and names and how good they make themselves look and fell but illusion and things are not always as seem.

They may work together as a team to disable someone emotionally, socially, spiritually , financially and list goes on.

Many are stories of wealthy professionals and if "friends" and others steal from them and set them up , it not so difficult.
Specially if they dont have a social net work because people jealous who were ment to be friends betrayed them.

Dementia on people who are not and mentally disabled on those been bullied and abused, raped etc by those stealing from them.
Disempowered and involves so much money it not so easy clear things up.

Medicines can be very harmful.
Theres a injection they give some and after they got it they drool and become like retardation .
Often they may be given over 5 different types mediacteion leaving them more sick than they were to begin with.
Often leaving horrid side effects that literally seem designed to disable people.
Combine that with behaviours they may have abuse etc and voila a healthy person who simply was raped, abused etc becomes mentally disabled drooler.

Those who are depressed should be supported socially, emotionally and given methods to help b4 medicated.
But this society seems medicate first.
Also very cautious of what medication to take.
Instead those depressed may get bullied, excluded from society , outcast, isolated, looked down at, hated, etc.
Hows healing that and the rape etc goes on.....
Problem with society and a bad people governing it when they should not have authority to do so.

I know people try kill them selves because they had stalkers who rape them and nomatter what they do they always there yrs and yrs and they want escape them, it.
Noone helps them and when police help them (praise such police) but the police what can they do if it politicians and well know educated people......

more understanding, love , social inclusion, grant restraining orders .........
These things are free.
But when we have companies making so much money on disabling people......good luck.

Articles of drs getting paid by pharmaecutical companies to give patients there medications so they make money.
Often they were later proven illegal du to side effects they have.
Drs getting holidays and money.

The best medication is free.

Ideally, no one *should* need meds.....in the same way that ideally there *should* be no need for war, but there still is. But we live in a currently imperfect world. Mental issues do exist right now. Same as with a physical sickness that needs medicine because our faith is too weak to heal ourselves of the sicknesses, the same applies to mental health.

Also it depends on the diagnosis and the pills. No one should be made to feel ashamed for getting the only help they know how to get with what they know now. There is already enough shame associated with getting professional help with mental problems, hence why so many go untreated.

I have a friend who needs insulin because of diabetes. I have two friends who need medication to regulate their thinking and nerves because their body is not producing it. I take thyroid because my gland stopped producing what my body requires. It is a good thing, I thank God for all these medications.

Once I became depressed. Someone pointed out to me that depressing thoughts produced hormone action in my body that produced more depressing thoughts, and if I used good thoughts my body would do the opposite. They pointed out to me the times I had felt elated about something, and how it made everything in my life seem good. So I changed my thought pattern and it stopped the depression.

Prayer and God works the same way, but that doesn't mean medication when it is needed isn't a blessing.

I agree that our society tends to seek out medication much more than is should, esp. for our children. I think no matter what, there will always be a void in someones life if the do not have Jesus. That relationship is the most important thing, and without that I see many people struggle with anxiety, anger issues, etc. and may try to mask this pain with prescription medication or addictions. It is terrifying what satan's strongholds can do to a person:(.

I am one that also tries to look at more natural ways (diet, supplements, etc). to help the body and the issues first, then if all else fails, medication may be needed. I think that tissue/body work is also important for people that have been thru trauma (i.e. car accident, falling down stairs, PTSD, pretty much anything). Muscle tissue and do all kinds of strange things when it's out of whack :).

But, I do believe that medication can be crucial for some. I didn't really know how I felt about medication (specifically in mental health), until I completed a Psych rotation for my clinical work. I spent a lot of time in the acute inpatient psych units where people would be admitted for holds in the locked unit for a certain amount of time. Many of these people where ones that for whatever reason, went their medication, and were unable to function normally. There was a man who, in a manic phase (bipolar disorder) emptied their checking account to buy as many bicycle tires that he could find. There was another lady who the cops brought in because she thought her husband was a CIA agent trying to kill her and her children were not really hers. And the people with schizophrenia, who my heart goes out too. A lady there suffered from auditory hallucinations and was so terrified she spent most of her time curled up in her dryer (yes, the dryer). She told me that was the only place she felt safe. After her medication was stable, she explained to me how she hears these voices exactly how she would hear a person talking to her and can be difficult to know what is real and what is a hallucination. Medication was an absolute necessity for these individuals. So when some people make a blanket statements about there is no real need for medication in mental health, I always think about the people.

Medication or not, Jesus is still key:).

My opinion, yes I think meds are a good idea. If your doctor feels it would benefit you, I think you should trust your doctor. Many meds are given for the short term time needed, something for you to discuss and make a choice on with your doctor.

Mental health meds can be good, but should always be the last resort. Personally, i tend to avoid them, though. But i have been told a few times i should be on them for depression. I just have no interest in taking that route. And now i'm on a lot of meds for physical issues as it is, and last thing i want is more meds to take.
Mental health is a greatly neglected area in Christianity.

if the medication is helping you and stabilizing you, then i believe you should take it,but you should be careful not to depend on it and abuse it.

I believe that with much prayer The Lord will lead you in the decision to use meds. We use a small amount if med. to help our son focus, but we didn't feel led to put him on med. during his younger years and we're glad we didn't. I need a med. for thyroid, I don't like the fact I have to take it. But I will while it's available. If I don't take it I'm effected mentally even though it's a physical condition. It doesn't stop me from trusting in the healing power of Jesus. I'm believing for healing for both of us and will trust that The Lord will tell us to stop taking meds. at the right time. I don't want to get comfortable or dependent on med. because as I grow in Christ, my faith will grow too.

I am a big supporter for those who use medicine is a responsible manner. our brain is an organ also so it can deteriorate, lose it's effectiveness, hormones can change cell responses, anything can happen and I believe GOD gave us the resources and brains to use those resources wisely.

thanks everyone for your input. I work at a psych hospital and absolutely LOVE it. I love seeing people clear, laugh again...chat, hold jobs when they are able to do so. I also take meds for mood stabilization and this has helped me in my life a lot.

I think if you depend on meds it can make you worse. Medication always has negative sides to it. When the Lord gave meds to help, it is not a good idea to refuse them. Meds are wonderful for people who don't know the Lord. For people who can understand the Lord's instruction about mental health, the meds can lead them to a state where they can use what the Lord tells them about it.

There was a movie about a math genius (Nash) who cured himself of schizophrenia called "A Beautiful Mind". Nash's son is schizophrenic and is dependent on medication.

More and more science is showing that obeying the Lord about what we are to think about, about meditating on His word can actually change the very shape of our mind. Science calls it mental health practices, and they teach meditation as saying aaahhh, but a rose by any name is a rose and our Lord gives us the genuine rose.

I believe that meds are being abused by the medical society. I have a grand-nephew who was taking meds because they said he misbehaved too much in school. He was in the welfare system when my sister got him and demanded he be taken off of them.
He is doing well in school today and is a bright and well functioning young man.
Last school term the mother of my grandson invited me to attend a meeting in regards to one of the boys where they were diagnosing him with a problem. I spoke on how he was doing well when in my care as for any his age. I reminded them of his age and didn't seem to have a problem when we realized he was going to be starting school so whenever they came by to visit (just about every day) we made a game of teaching him his colours, abcs, and counting and lots of book reading. By the end of the meeting the doctor said he was going to re-write the assessment based on the information provided. Another child saved from being labeled and put on pills.
I have another grandson whom they labeled as something to do with the mother drinking while she was carrying him in her womb. She never drank. The father didn't believe in such and made sure she quit and they actually did quite well.
I hear voices when I am awake and even in my sleep. People don't believe in the spiritual world but I just keep holding onto to Jesus as my rock of salvation. I don't give the voices any hold over me and dismiss them as being unimportant and just noise.
When we allow these issues to take prominence in our lives it is giving them power which they then use against you.
I know there are some people out there who cannot control what is happening to them but I feel for those who are abused by the system to push their drugs.
One of my younger brothers died because they made him take this drug and I also know of a young man who they told that if he didn't take a drug he would be arrested and taken to a psych ward and he is just a sweet young man in his twenties. Looks after himself well, courteous and respectful.
There is neither just black nor white in this question.

I'm not doctor, and I'm not suggesting meds are always bad, but I suspect meds are way over used. When a person is depressed, I think it usually is because there is sin in their lives. Remove the sin and the person gets better.

This is a very interesting thread and one that I have gathered a lot of helpful information from and I would like to reflect back and saying that for myself going through depression and anxiety it is something that I have to be strong through and cope with through the Lord. Regarding on medication, I know they help a few people but as mentioned it is a good idea not to rely on them especially not to take advantage of them. I have heard in several different situations that if one is having issues in there life or they have a mental health issue apart from talking to a doctor that they would be able to confide in their pastor. How do you all feel about that, to speak to a pastor instead of a psych?

Don't know the percentage of all the pharmacutical medications but over 50 percent of more are using a base of herbal leaves, of trees, that are grown in the rain forests like Brazil and all over the world, as a base. Not all though. There is a scripture that says, there is a leave for every disease. So the pharmecuticals are incorporating it in, so this is a good thing. When someone is upset, or anxious, this is very helpfull to get into a peacefull frame of mind to pray. But we should always depend on our Lord for his True Peace, and not in a tablet that might last a day or hours, but it is helpfull, so it is wonderful that medicines are available...

Yeah, I love those fields of Poppies. MaryJane is a nice plant, too.
