"Temporary fencing around the World War II Memorial prevents people from entering the monument on the National Mall October 1, 2013 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)"

And the fence is doing a great job, isn't it?

So, it's kind of humorous because they have security at the monuments and such around the clock since the monuments are closed...but still staffed...but closed...right? Except for this one, of course, because the fence is sufficient.

Sorry, I'm in a snarky mood again. It happens. Please carry on with your regularly scheduled day.

NOTE: in case you missed it, there are people inside the fence visiting the memorial, hence the sarcasm. Sorry to explain...I just don't want to have to explain later. :D

Of course, I don't live there, so those tall things may not be considered part of the memorial and my snarkiness may be for naught...which would be a little sad...but I'll survive if that's the case. :)

If they had taken this photo just a touch lower, it would have looked like he was walking on the fence, and that would have been cool, yes? :)

It's gotta stink for people who scheduled a sight seeing trip to DC this month.

But closing outdoor monuments? How is that supposed to be effective?

I know, right? You may not get up close and personal, but you can still get close and get photos and such. Yeah, I would be so peeved if I'd gone to DC or NYC or something and couldn't go to a monument due to the shutdown. Blah. :(

We had a once-in-a-lifetime trip to DC years ago. I contacted the White House about a tour, got all the paperwork I needed, etc. We were so excited! Then right before the trip I contacted them again to make sure it was all lined up. They found out that the person who'd been working with me had resigned right after taking my information, and had not submitted it, nor let anyone know. By then it was too late for background checks, etc, so we didn't get to go inside the white house.

Soooo bummmed...

Are they even giving tours anymore?

Given our Government's inability to prevent people from crossing our borders in droves, is it any wonder they can't keep a few people out of these Memorials? :)

No. White House Tours ended earlier this year. :) I only know because I was in DC in April and the tours stopped shortly before I arrived.
