I love technology, I find it so fascinating, amazing and fun. I am also passionate about it and seem to want to get my hands on all of it and try it. If you watch some of my technology videos on YouTube you might find me to be worshipping (lack of a better word) of materialistic things, but I'm not its just a passion. If you saw someone who loves sports and trained and practiced it all the time you wouldn't think them to be a worshipper( again with lack of a better word) of the sport.

I guess what I'm trying to say is how do I do what I love, which is getting my hands on new technology, trying it out and giving my thoughts to the world and not come across to someone as a materialistic worshipper*.

Thanks for all your responses :D

Well, to use your sports example, I'd say that person could be worshipping sports. It's not necesarily true though. What matters in terms of what's an idol and what's not is whether or not you place the idol above God. If you don't place technology above God, then you should have nothing to worry about.

Also remember, you don't need to convince other people that you aren't worshiping idols, God knows whether you are or not, and that's the one that counts.

The Christian thing to do would be to review the technology you do, to the best of your ability. Showing that you have God-given skills in that area, gives glory to God. It's a form of personal worship. Same goes for writers, artists etc. Give your everything to God. People will see that and if they don't recognise it, at least God's your focus.

Its easy to convince yourself that you are not putting it above God... Because you hold the idea that your technology is not God therefore you do not hold it above Him... However, I disagree with that line of thinking... I say watch where your mind wonders to see where your heart lies... If you are constantly thinking about technology and rarely think about God... Technology is your god... If you only think about Jesus when you need too... He is not your God...

my 2 cents...

Well, he is your God, but you need to repent of not putting him first and put him first. We all make idols of things at times but we're still Christians. Repentance is key. God forgives. Put Christ first and if you sin again, keep putting Christ first in your life. It's a constant day-to-day struggle between the flesh and our spirit. Keep fighting the good fight!

I believe in the new earth, we'll have a second chance at technology that doesn't harm the earth, cause any fear of false worship, and allow us to do amazing things.

And that nobody who wants to experience it will be deprived due to lack of "money" or power hungry control measures.

For now, for me, technology is just "there" and I look forward to the day I can truly lay down my annoying cell phone.

Great post! Sounds like you've read Randy Alcorn's non-fiction book, "Heaven".

Howdy brother,

I share your human interest in technology. It has pretty much always held my attention, though not so much lately.

A simple way to test it is this: If you felt beyond doubt that God wanted you to move to the African bush away from civilization, never to see technology again, How would this make you feel? Angry? Sad? Slightly reluctant, but looking forward to serving God?

"Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all other things will be added unto you"

If it's not coming first in your life, maybe it's what God wants you to do. But if your first reaction is to disobey, maybe it's time to run.

Perhaps the fact that you feel the need to question this at all is telling of where your heart is. This may be evidence of God trying to get your attention and you feeling that pull, but being reluctant to set aside your love of technology for Gods voice.
This isn't to say your passion is a bad thing. But perhaps you have set it above God, and He's aware and trying to get you to be aware as well. Otherwise i doubt you would be questioning yourself like this.

Ugly says something is is truly good, and you should take it to heart...

If you are a drunk, and one sip of alcohol makes you want to revert back to your drunkenness then you shouldn't drink...
If you can have a drink without wanting more and appreciate that God has given us alcohol as a gift then God bless...

So I think you are asking the question am I a drunk... If you were to look back at your life and substitute it for alcohol... Would you be a drunkard...

If so this is a sin problem... And the only way to get over it is, repent, and get to the core of why you idolized technology so much...
