A conversation on this topic got started in another thread, so I am moving here, into its own thread.

Here is a pretty good article explaining the history of the use of X in the place of "Christ" throughout history, and why it has only recently become controversial for people to use it in the word Christmas.

There is a Wikipedia page on "Xmas" that is also helpful. And if you do some searching around, you can find many more helpful resources. I thought the funniest thing about the Wikipedia page was seeing Christmas cards from 1910 and 1920 that used "Xmas."

Xmas is just shorthand--you would pronounce it the same way as "Christmas".

I agree. Even if you're supposed to pronounce it Christmas, I can't whenever I read it.

Kind of like when I read Colonel out loud, and I say... Just can't say it.

If you worship Santa then you can call it xmas, but if you worship Christ like I do then you should call it Christmas. I like to celebrate the birth of someone who realy exists not some fairy tale, but thats just me.

I had a Bible teacher who showed us the original spelling of Christ's name. I can't remember the letters exactly But it did start with an X. The X meant Christ.
