I'm going to vent here a minute about health insurance but I want to sound as apolitical about it as possible. I have my own views about the Affordable Health Care Act but not expressing them here.

Through an employer I chose a high deductible health insurance program. I chose it because I have relatively few health issues with me and the family members on it and the high deductible dollars were affordable because of the advent of the HSA or health savings account that I and my employer would fund over time. The deductible was fairly low - it started at about $2k and over 3 years jumped to $2,500. This was all do-able because the HSA was tax deferred and I was paying a little bit over time. The HSA also transferred into the next year without penalty and the money was mine - I could essentially do whatever I wanted with it, knowing of course, that the money is meant for health issues and would be taxed if spent on something else. To me, this was a good program because after the $2,500.00 was paid, the health insurance which was way more affordable would pick up health costs 100% after the deductible was met.

Now suddenly this year my deductible went up to more than double - $6,500.00 and my premium went up too. This puts my health costs in a whole new bracket. Now - I'm self insured basically. There's no way in the world I can meet the deductible in a HSA unless I paid into it for several years! Then, if something happened health wise, I'd be back at square 1. In my case, meeting just the deductible would be crippling financially.

This essentially forces me into a health care plan next year where there is no cost controls or HSA that can defer tax. I would have to go with a conventional plan of the much higher premium and much lower deductible or co pay. This leaves me with no control over my own money and provides the government with more money to tax.

So I have to think.....there are two things in my life right now that cost me more dollars than anything else and those two things are taxes and insurance. When I added those things up from 2013 EACH were higher than any other bill I had. So I have to ask myself what's going on when I'm being forced out of a health care program that worked for me and I'm paying more for ....you guessed it....taxes and insurance?

"If you want to know what's in the Bill, you have to vote on it first............"

(who said that?"

hmmmm :)

Sorry for you, and it isn't any comfort to be told that you are not alone..............many, many more Americans are going to fnd your story a reality in their lives over the next couple of years.

Now, you could try and sign up for "Medicade." If you can, it's free. Of course, there are many Doctors who will not accept Medicade...........reimbursement rates far too low..............OR you could just get out of Health Insurance all together. Pay the fine imposed for not having Health Insurance...........it's about $100.00 annually.

Set aside a portion of your income in a Savings Account in the event of some unexpected illness or injury........and if you need medical attention, go to the Emergency Room of your nearest Hospital. They can not (by law) refuse to treat you. When you get the bill from them, send them $10.00 (or whatever) and tell them this is all you can afford.......as long as you are consistent in this, they pretty much have to live with it. Might hurt your Credit Score.......but your Savings Account should be flourishing!

:)

Thanks for your advice. :D I truly just want to really pay my way. I don't really want to take anything that's not mine or get service knowing I won't pay for it. On the other hand I am truly trying to protect myself and family from disaster. Looks like now I'm going to be stealing service that isn't mine and still face a disaster. What a world.

I completely agree with you. Health care has spiriled (sp??) out of control - costs, litigation opportunities, the layers of management and suppliers.....you name it. It is so mess up.

You're going to love my story. I was laid off my job last June 27th 2013 and have had no insurance at all since July 1st 2013. I pray a lot at 59 with a few health issues. I have not taken one penny of unemployment money as I don't want a job I am forced retired now. However, I wanted to pay off my debt since no more money is coming in so for 2013 and 2014 my income is over double what I made when working because of paying off debt. I have been paying my own medicines and doctor visits out of my own pocket.

I have not one penny as income from a job all the money I have now is being pulled from my 401K account which they of course consider income. Try to buy insurance from the Market Place with a double income....They want me to pay between $500 to over $700 per month.....Yea right... I personally will continue to pray for health and pay the penalty this year it is much cheaper than those monthly premiums.

So welcome to my issues with health care... I'm screwed any way I go. Please pardon my language.

Are you saying you are paying out of your pocket for doctor visit and medication ?
I thought if people did not sign up they would be fined. So it is cheaper this way
right ? We are living in a socialist Country. As you said earlier... we are going to
have to do a lot of praying for our health. ~

I heard a sad story last week regarding health care increase.
A person is type 1 diabetic. The monthly cost was $70.00.
They got a letter notifying the cost is going to raise to $800.00

So frightening because we are going to hear a lot more. Don't
you just love the 'change' we were promised ? But that is
a topic for another time. ~ J~K~2

They will get me next year when I file my taxes so instead of getting a refund the government will take it instead for the health care penalty......Of course I will still have no job or real worked for income just what I saved. So I am not in any way muching off of the government. I am paying my own way medicine and doctor no help from anyone other than God. If I get sick really sick I just stay home and die. That's the plan anyway. God is good....I will trust in Him.

I figure I can afford a cold or a broken bone beyond that it's a no go.

but wait! hold on!! I thought if we liked it we could keep it. I thought that premiums going way up were isolated incidents. this was going to fix everything. or could it be it was a government power grab and the people in Washington never did really care what happened to average folks. I think the latter. how about the rest of us??
