A Tiny Story​

Sam and his mother woke up one morning surprised to find that their cat had kittens. There were 8 of them; four black, two orange, and two gray. Sam delighted in knowing there were kittens in his house! He was overjoyed to see such tiny blessings. But his happiness soon faded once he saw the motionless body of one black kitten. Sam's mother rubbed it's belly to rouse it. But the body was cold. Sam watched as his mother took away the tiny dead kitten out of the room. He never saw it again after that.

Sam continued to watch the remaining seven being cleaned and nursed by their mother. He had never felt such pride in his life over an animal. He knew what it was like to win a little league game. He knew how to accept an award for a coloring contest. But never in his life had he felt such pride over something small and furry. Never had he felt such joy in his heart to know life sprang forth from his little house companion.

As time pressed on, Sam's mother announced that it was time to have breakfast and get ready to go to school. But Sam didn't want to leave his cat and his kittens. He begged his mother if he could stay home for the morning. But she insisted that he must go to school for the whole day. Needless to say Sam had no other choice but to agree. He ate his toast, and his scrambled eggs on the floor next to his cat and her kittens. He put on his socks, his sweater, his pants, his jacket and his shoes in the sight of his cat. He said 'good bye' to each and every one of the kittens and his cat as he left out the door.

At school he told all his friends and his teachers his cat had kittens. Not many of them were impressed, but Sam was still beaming from the sight of his litter.

As he got home from school, he threw off his jacket, his shoes, his sweater and raced toward the box full of cats. Sam's mother could only shake her head as she picked up her son's outer wear off the floor. She followed into the living room after him, where also the box was located. Sam looked inside, and saw the kittens bunched up and asleep. He lightly touched their heads and felt that baby soft tuft of fur. What he didn't know was how much sensitive they would be and began to and cry. He could only smile as the mother purred in concern for her babies. Sam moved and shifted the 7 kittens around to get a better look at them. He soon found out that their was only 6.

Another black kitten died. It suffocated under the weight and fur of the rest of the litter. Sam was yet again saddened by this. He picked up the body and offered it to his mother. She stood quietly rubbing the poor thing's stomach and left the room once again.

I'm a little puzzled about how Sam and his mother could be surprised by a litter of eight. Surely the cat was quite large before she gave birth.
