Like I said, LC understands the science and bio chemistry behind this, unlike most lay people. That's why i say none of you can back your claims of coffee being good for you with science, because it can not be.

Fabulous sum up. Accompanied with a positive attitude to learn, engaging in scientific discourse is always a good learning practice for one and all.

A friend has just shared a coffee joke with me -

10 year old: Mum, why do you need to drink coffee in the morning?
Will you die without it?

Mum: No, I won't die if I don't drink my coffee in the morning.
But you might!

True story. My father in law (who attended the RLDS church--similar to LDS) was taught in his church that drinking coffee was forbidden by God, so he refused to drink coffee. One Saturday morning, around 15 years ago, we had my wife's family over for breakfast and he was so offended that we were all drinking coffee that he simply walked out the door without even saying goodbye. Just before he left, my wife asked him if he would like a cup of coffee and he replied, "you know I don't drink coffee!"

The funny thing is, once he was admitted into a nursing home years later and got away from all the weirdness at his church, he actually began to drink coffee with the rest of his friends at the nursing home.

Haha just so we're clear... I hope I wasn't the one who caused the ruckus in this thread. I was just playing on the idea that 1. the gateway theory is silly. and 2. the oddity that coffee is a widely accepted recreational drug (with fairly bad cardiovascular repercussions) within the Christian community while marijuana and (often times) alcohol are not. Just an observation that we normalize some things while demonizing others at what would seem to be a subconscious level. Not to say that coffee is on the same level as alcohol, but the difference in aggressiveness toward the two topics is a little staggering.

I believe coffee is one of the best beverages around! Speaking of which, I believe my Keurig needs a cleaning :(
