What expresses you best, BMW, Lexus, or good works?

Many people use their cars as a message to the world about who they are instead of for transportation. I wonder if there is a connection to idol worship?

I'd say this is very true, I used to worship my car I once had a nice looking new car before I was born again, I'm not into cars in any way but it was how I looked in front of everyone. Then about a year after being born again, I fell behind in payments and it was repossessed. I took it for one last drive before it was to be towed and I remember saying, this was my pride and joy and then I thought came - that was my problem. I didn't have a car for over a year after that, enduring harsh cold mornings to get to work but I learnt to praise God even in that hard time. Then a friend bought a new car and through prayer gave us their old car, which in our culture looked like a girly car but I didn't care, I was very thankful for finally having a car, I had an accident in that one a year ago, thank God it wasn't serious but God provided a car for us that is now much safer than that one for my beautiful boy 18 months now too travel in, it doesn't look like much but my mechanic says its great mechanically. That's my story about cars lol

redtent, i would have to saw what expresses me best is good works. I say this not to brag, but only because I dont have a car . :p I know alot of people who view their cars as cool "status symbols". The sweeter the ride, the better the status, I guess. LOL. I never learned to drive because of health issues but even if I had, I'd be much happier with a clunker that ran instead of a porsche or ferrari. :)

Hi Precious Lady RedTent: That is a very good topic to bring up
because many are addicted to new vehicles. My husband had to
have a new car every 2-3 years. I got to help choose them, but
really did not need to trade them as often as we did.

As far as status symbols, I think it can be. Our cars were always
nice. I thought I didn't have that proud feeling when driving the
newest model, but later in life I realized 'yes' I did feel young
and hip in the beautiful cars we owned.

Now that I am older, I don't like to drive, and my husband has
a nice truck that is still like new, and nice to drive, but the status
doesn't do anything for me. I have a cute little white car with
a spoiler on back and it looks sporty. I still dislike driving. You
could give me the most beautiful sporty car and now, I would
say it will only sit in the driveway. When I became ill, I was so
weak, the car felt like I was driving a tank. ( It was larger ).
I have lost all desire to drive and so I would prefer to put Jesus
first. I guess you can say I am on my computer so often, I
dislike getting out of the house.

If I were to get a new one ? I would like a Lexus. Black.
And You ? What would your preference be ?

i think it's not so much what you drive but how you drive and where, when and why you park it.

Someone sounds like they are actually going the way of Jesus and no thought of a BMW or Lexus....LOL ~J~K~2

A Lexus bought by someone who pays 75% tax on it, and someone who pays a small amount of tax, is in a different situation. It's the heart that counts, and we can't police other people's hearts. (I have enough trouble seeing to my own...) :)

I still have an very elderly Ford Van, big enough to sleep in when I went camping. It sits, now, unless I can find someone to drive it.

My daughter and I used to laugh at her husband, who felt he could not let anyone see him in my old van. Their son drives a Lamborghini he paid $500,000 for, much to the disgust of lots of the rest of the family. The floor in the garage for this wonder was $2,000, as that car is too elegant for a regular floor.

Son in law had a Range Rover he would drive so proudly, watching people envy the car. One day when we were driving on ice, it went in the ditch. My daughter and I sat giggling as a rusty old pickup pulled that fancy car back on the road. He kept watching the road to be sure no one saw that car's and his disgrace. He sold it soon afterwards.

Oops... I got mixed up there. Okay the son you just lost , was it his son that
drove the Lamborghini ? They are super special and valuable. Does he still
have it ? Now the son in -law had a nice one.... that is a funny story and I
would love to have heard you giggle over that sight..... Sounds like your
Van is going to just be your Chariot taking you off to Heaven.... LOL... special.

the son I just lost has a family too wrapped up in the Lord and the church to bother with a Lamborghini.

Mike still has the Lamborghini, he inherited his view of cars as representing his value in the world from his Dad. He is my daughter's stepson. We keep him in our prayers and hope his value system will change and that he sees his own true value that does not need Lamborghinis to express it.

We will be in prayer for your family members who need to know the Lord before He returns.
Are you coping as well as possible with the loss of your son ? I have prayed for you.
Love you bunches RedTent.... (( HUGS)) J~K~2

As you know they were known as a guaranteed lemon, that's the car that describes me best.
I'm not familiar with the car called 'good works'.

Yes mam, you hit the nail on the head for me. I bought the lie they are selling - looks, money, cars, houses those are what gives a person value. Yes all those things have been an idol for me, some continue to be. I am still in the process of ripping idols out by the roots and it is an extremely painful process.

But I love Jesus and I try to hold on to his truths despite how loud the lies can be. I still enjoy the car but I am bearing good fruit and if the car was gone I would miss the enjoyment of it but it would not change who I am. My prayer is everyday I am moving closer to following Jesus.

You are very right Red this is a sin so many of us, even us Christians, struggle with

LOL... I knew it was a car that did not make the grade. The person who
owned it was a school teacher and her daughter and I were friends. So
I had the privileged of riding in a well known car that failed to make the
grade. LOL...

My father was a Studebaker man. Then Olds. Loved the Olds.
My husband had good taste in cars, we had many, but the repeats
were... 3 Thunderbirds, 2 Cougars, 2 Bonneville's. Before them
they were Station Wagons. 3 children. I had fun zipping down the
Interstate in my cars. Then ... I got tired of fighting traffic and crazy
drivers. Now I am a "Jesus" girl mostly. That is best, right ?

I am going to come in on this one. I will say we still own vehicles... WE have a
Ridgeline Truck, and I have a little sporty Toyota car. And you know what ? I
despise driving and for me they sit in the drive way.

And you are right... You and RedTent... they can be an idol. I used to love
being seen in my shiny nice cars. I am grateful we could afford them, don't
get me wrong. We were blessed. But, I no longer need a vehicle to define
who I am either.

As matter of fact..... I don't think there is anything anymore I need to define
me. Just my walk with Jesus, my actions, ( sometimes I fail there ) and truly
being concerned about the souls of the lost. I am amazed at how many
people call themselves Christians but the fruit is just not there.... Okay, now
I am judging.. Oops....sometimes my fruit gets bruised and we have to toss
it out and start over. I love being with Christians and sharing testimonies,
and also enjoy the funny things the Lord does at times to give us something
we can laugh about... good clean laughter....

I grew up in the back seat of a '52 Nash Rambler and got car sick (puke) whenever I had to dress up and put up with the start-stops of a non air conditioned tin Lizzy...I'm starting to feel a throbbing in my throat now even as I am writing of it.
