The Bible should be read plainly, but we do need to account for figurative language. Also, the Old Testament should be read in light of the New Testament. Welcome to CC.

Hi tintin, thank you but still confused , so shellfish is ok now and clothes of different materials are ok and we dont have to stone our unruly children at the gates, and homosexuality is ok , jesus never got married but had a lot of men friends , should we throw the old testament away , god was wrong ?

Hey there again. I wouldn't say that because a lot of things are different now than they were in the old testament that they aren't of value to read or that God was "wrong". For example, when God told Abraham to sacrifice his son and then after told him not to do it after all (Genesis 22: 1-18) it wasn't because he was "wrong" the first time or the second time. He had a reason for giving both commands for different reasons. What those reasons are we can't always know or figure out, even using worldly logic (sometimes especially not using worldly logic), but there are reasons. Jesus declares all foods clean (Mark 7:14-19), we don't have to sacrifice animals anymore because Jesus paid the ultimate price for sin (Hebrews 10:1-18), and homosexual acts are addressed later in the new testament though and it is still called a sin (1 Corinthians 6:9-11) (which is not to say that those who struggle with homosexual attractions are automatically damned or should be metaphorically "stoned" anymore than the woman Jesus defended who was caught in adultery (John 8:1-11)). The old testament was to instruct, to help first learn what goodness was. Jesus' sacrifice is what allows us first forgiveness for when we do sin and the ability to really change the heart and draw close to God. The Bible never mentions Jesus being married, and he did have lots of friends while he walked on earth, and he traveled and associated with both men and women. I hope that maybe helps. I'm not a Bible scholar by any means. Keep praying and keep seeking about this.

Seems everything in old testament has been replaced by new testament ? Gods rules mean nothing because of jesus. Jews were the chosen people now Christians are? If were to ignore the old testament then Adam moses the 10 commandments also out the window? My life has got worse since iv read the bible and taken notes on what it has said, instead of just listening to preaching, I think we need a third testament, that dosent involve killing your son for sins , that you yourself committed , mass murder , floods, plagues , mary was married to Joseph but god was jesus farther , then jesuse was illegitimate a bastard , as a not nice way of saying, but beeing a bastard is a sin in the eyes of our lord says our preacher ? I need help but dont think I can trust god anymore, sorry

Welcome to Christian Chat, Sicbash. Yes, take the Lord’s commandments literally. Some parts of the Bible might be figurative.
