A bit of background information, I am a married mom of two young children and have never known God or any religion. I worry about my children and want to raise them well. I want them to feel loved, connected and comfortable with themselves and possibly in religion as they grow up. I have never felt comfortable in any church, I've tried to go a few times but feel so awkward and out of place. I don't want my children to feel lost as I do but I don't know where or how to start.

I love my family and my life. How do I start to figure everything out? How could I ever feel as if I belong somewhere? Thanks ahead of time for any posts. :)

Hi welcome to cc :)

You ask how to figure everything out. My first thought is....are you familiar with the idea that believing is about a personal relationship with God, by accepting Jesus as your Savior?

It is good to find a good church but first of all, this personal relationship is more important. It is what you live and so also can learn your kids. We all need Jesus as our Savior because we need to be saved from sin that is in all of us since Adam and Eve did fall into sin. After you choose and accepted Jesus the Holy Spirit will help you to find your way in live.

So my first question would be if what I wrote makes any sense to you ;)

Hi Aniras,

And welcome. No matter your inspiration, you're a great deal closer to God than you imagine and he, you. I was 14 when I was trying to do the same as you, as you say "figure everything out" and well, 20 years later I'm still trying to figure everything out :) At 14, I was going to church for a little while and most of it didn't make sense to me but the people were nice enough. It does make you feel awkward and out of place because you're new and it's hard to know sometimes what's going on. Eventually you catch on. Though I was the mouthy little kid, constantly cussing, people were praying for me as I will you and your family. Not long after I started going to church I prayed and ask God into my life. I didn't even know what I was doing but I knew from that point on that he was in my life.

Having just relocated from the Midwest to southern California, I'm pretty much - once again - in the same place you are; new and observing. One thing I can say for sure is many Christian churches (I've probably been to 6-10 regularly over the last 15 years) welcome children and even feed them a snack. It all takes some getting used to but you will. And there are plenty of churches to try until you get comfortable and I have a sneaking suspicion, you'll find one you really like and stay connected with.

One yet another note you will find plenty of mom's at church to connect with, some around your age and some older. Again, this is probably one of those things that come with (often very little) time. Sometimes you have to be the first to say hi but get connected no matter what. You have questions and better than just posting them here, you'll have someone in person to connect with.

I'm honored to have "met" someone, by the way, who sees the value in community and connection and is willing to do anything to ensure their kids are being raised well. If you really want to start somewhere with them, I'd look around (either online or at a bookstore) for a children's bible. I'm biased of course but the stories are incredibly helpful and insightful and they have pictures :)

I hope this helps. It's awfully late, even for California, so I'm out of here for now.

Praying for you.

I could give you a philosophical discourse about God being in your heart, and it's His action that helps you believe there is something better than something else. And then I could say, "start out with the idea that He is the source of everything good you can imagine or aspire to" (loosely based on the first chapters of the Book of Romans), but that might not be the best way for you.

Why not just do what my wife did, and call out to Him, "God if you're there, come find me." That's always a life changer. He is very good at proving He is real and giving us exactly what our hearts need.

With Him leading the relationship, you will get exactly what you and your children need, and He will get you to the right place, whether that be church or somewhere else. (Wait until you find out how big the Body of Christ really is.) Then it won't be about religion, but it will be about HIM, in your life and in theirs.
