Why do the Cherubim "Guard" God's Throne? From what? Why?

thanks for responding. I guess I took it from here, from an article I was reading: "In other words, the presence of the cherubim in the Bible wasn’t something the Hebrew prophets just made up. The cherubim were known by different names by the other cultures of the ancient Near East, but they served a similar role in all of them. The cherubim were supernatural bodyguards for the throne of Yahweh..."

but if there are no verses supporting this, then I will dismiss it. They do hold the throne up, but "guarding," I too, could not find a verse to support.

The world of angels, both the original and fallen is a fascinating one. There isn't much information about them in our scripture, but lots if we accept ancient books of history. God created angels before He created men, for it was a fallen angel who tempted Eve.
By reading both scripture and other ancient books we don't consider scripture the story is this: There were six cherubs and scores of Seraphim and Thrones. Satan was a Cherubim. Satan took a third of the angels with Him when he rebelled, Satan and the fallen angels are a powerful force in our world and angels guard us against the evil they wish for us. Cherubim guard the throne of the Lord.

Hebrews Chapter 9 provides the key
Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.
2 For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary.
3 And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;
4 Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;
5 And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.
The role of the 2 cherubims is to guard the entrance to God's presence. Sinful men, possessing Adam's sin nature, could not enter into God's presence without being destroyed by the 2 of them.
But once Jesus paid the final price for our justification, the 2 cherubims no longer needed to guard God from us. We can now confidently walk into the presence of God, once we have the blood of Christ in our hearts. That is why Hebrews 9:5 says which we cannot now speak particularly.

Because there is no such Scripture. God needs no angels to guard His throne. So they are there to praise Him (give Him glory, honor, and thanks) night and day and declare His holiness.
And the four beasts [cherubim] had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever... (Rev 4:8,9)
