To me that tongue speaking is a bit too much for me because I want to know what is being said. And again I'm speaking for myself
When I first started speaking in tongues, I asked God to show me what I was praying over. And He did. That led me to pray in my mind in english (my 2nd language) but with my lips in tongues. And I think that combination may be what Paul referred to as praying with your understanding and praying with the Spirit. They can be done at the same time.

but of course I have the gift of praying in tongues; so I know that it is indeed the refreshing.
It's funny that Paul called tongues the least of the gifts, yet it is the only gift Paul wishes we all would do. I think that is because all the other gifts are thru us to benefit others, while tongues is the only one to edify the user. It indicates that after a long day of doing for others, tongues recharge us so we may continue doing for others without suffering total burnout.

I've seen both practices in the Pentecostal movement.
I think what goes on today in a lot of Pentecostal/charismatic churches is PRECISELY why Paul wrote 1 Cor 14 on the proper time and place for these things. It's NOT a free-for-all.

I don't find any scriptures prohibiting humans from jumping off a skyscraper and flying either. You want to be the one to try it out?
Would that fall under the satan tempting Jesus to leap from the temple roof thing, and Jesus responding do not tempt God?

Anything you practice, you can master. As the saying go. Practice makes perfect
Third time you've mentioned mastering a gift.

That is the wrong mindset to take into the practice.

The Holy Spirit is the Master. One should not try to usurp His place.

Gifts of the spirit have to be real because their are fake ones. This makes no sense whatsoever.
satan doesn't bother with trying to fake things that are not of God. The fact that satan DOES fake tongues and muddy the waters on the subject IS proof that there are real tongues.

Who are you to tell me or anyone else what type of mindset we should have when it comes to Christianity. As a matter Of fact who are you to tell me or anyone else our mindset is wrong. So tell me what makes your mindset right?? In reality most pastors practice what sermon they usually going to preach on Sundays hun. Trust me they don't go in blind sided dear.

No it wouldn't. It would be stepping out on faith.

Every other time someone wants something miraculous—healing, financial blessing, etc.—it's considered stepping put on faith. But when you bring up the subject of drinking deadly poison or something truly dangerous suddenly it becomes testing God. Why is that?

Saying fake signs and wonders are proof there are real ones makes about as much sense as saying big foot is real because there have been so many fake sightings.

Study ... experience ... understanding ... scripture ... willingness to consider there may be error in my ways (see my first signature) ... the fact that others agree ...

May I ask what makes you so abrasive in your response? And the idea that one could ever master the things of God?

It depends on whether you are doing it on your own or under the guidance of the Spirit. If the Spirit tells you that snake won't harm you you're good. If you just go around grabbing snakes all on your own, you're tempting.

There is no other walk intended for the Church of Jesus Christ. Jesus told the first church "tarry in the upper room until you are in dude with power." Thats what they did and they proceeded from that point. They did not do anything until they got the power. That is the only method outlined as a starting place for the new believer.

What we see today is basically a mental walk. A mental gospel. An abstract Jesus. What the baptism of the holy Spirit does is brings the believer into intimacy or closeness with God.

These are the ones that hear the voice of Jesus. They they know him they talked to him. He is real to them. Those that have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit have a different walk with God, and With Jesus ,and the Holy Spirit. These believers are no only in a walk, but are also in an adventure.
Awesome
I will never forget it.
it is clear by the response you may want to not ask LOL.

I'm entitled to my opinion, that what makes me so abrasive with my response, and I'm also entitle to not believe God told people to speak in a language that no one but that person understands. If a person can't explain to me what they're saying in tongue, how can I jump in joy with some mumble bumble mess. Cause that's what it is....a Mess

Yes in many places it does become a mess. That's why Paul wrote 1 Cor 14, to explain the proper place and time for it. One of those restrictions is that it is used for us to speak to God, not to each other. So if someone is speaking to you in a tongue, they are doing it incorrectly.

And I believe Paul would rather we not speak in tongues than do it incorrectly.

But Paul also said he wished we ALL would do it (altho it is perfectly ok not to). And not to forbid it.

Yes you are entitled to your opinion, that does not mean you get to get all up in arms at my opinion.

And scripture trumps both our opinions.

yes you are entitled to your opinion, yet, it is the word of God that holds true over our opinion. Some people cannot understand no matter how much you provide the information.

Therefore 1cor 14:38 TLB 38 "But if anyone still disagrees—well, we will leave him(or her) in his ignorance".

If you have attended as many Pentecostal church meetings as I have you will agree that what is seen in all of them is the habit of "SPEAKING" in Tongues.

It is a method of speaking in such a way that no one understands what is said.
No one interprets what is muttered.
Women it seems are the ones who do most of the "Tongues" noises.

Now, allow me to say that I have been there and done that. However as I grew older and actually READ what the Bible says it becmae very clear that what is seen today is NOT BIBLICAL tongues as recorded in the Bible.

So then, instead of just accepting what we have been told or doing what we WANT to do, shall we actually see what the Bible does it fact say??????

Acts 2:7-11............
"And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God."

Notice the phrase in Acts 2:11, "our tongues." The crowds heard the Apostles preach in their own native tongues, not some unknown heavenly jibber jabber. There was NEVER any heavenly languages spoken that no one understood and required an interpreter.

There is a drastic difference between Biblical tongues and the heretical speaking in tongues we see in churches today.

The "speaking in tongues" which the Pentecostals foolishly practice are UNKNOWN tongues, not anything found on earth. Supposedly, those unknown tongues can only be interpreted by ONE spirit-filled member of the congregation.

The Apostle Paul speaks common sense to us Corinthians 14:19...
"Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue."

Now before replying to this post from an "Emotional" response, and actually that is what speaking in tongues is, an EMOTIONAL event, take the time to do the work first.

Read 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14. Anyone can see that they are "Corrective" Chapters from Paul to the church and the CONTEXT is .....ready.....
Speaking in tongues".

Now that being the correct hermeneutical point then notice carefully chapter 14:34........
"Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. "

Literally....the CONTEXT demands that "women are not permitted to speak in TONGUES in church".

Without women speaking in tongues there is then in fact no tongues movement at all.
