Or a strange man in a bear suit?
These days, if I saw a man in a bear suit, I'd assume the GPS either accidentally directed me to a furry convention, or a furry convention was being held in the woods.

The question going around gives the option of a man or a bear .. Not a ""Strange"" Man.. and a lot of woman are responding with a Bear because it is simply a man hate promoting questionnaire..
I think "meeting a man in the woods" generally means a stranger. If I saw someone I knew in the woods I wouldn't phrase it like that. I take the question as random bear vs. random man.

Please be more pedantic next time.
Gladly.

First of all, can you tell the sex of a bear right off from seeing it in the woods? Are you going to ask it if it identifies as a male or female bear? It could be a hermaphrodite after all. Furthermore, if you and I were hiking in the woods and I suddenly yell "BEARRR!" I highly doubt you are going to say "Woah, hold on. Male or female? I don't mess with female bears."

Also, despite your claim to have black bears where you live, does that mean there is 0 chance of encountering a Grizzly bear? One could have escaped from the circus for example.

I think what you are really getting at is, is it a female with cubs. I would rather meet a man with young children in the woods than a female bear with young cubs, but how many poll options did you want me to activate? I have a job you know, do you think Avena sativa just grows itself? (Answer: to a degree, yes, but cultivation improves many factors of the growth process.)

If my poll is flawed because someone can think of another variable that can be added, my poll will always be flawed. -Capt. Pedantic, ESQ.

I believe I'd just dress up like Richar.......I mean Rachel Levine our deputy health secretary.....

Everything would run FROM me. Matter of fact if me and bigfoot saw each other out in the woods and ran back and told somebody what we saw, neither one of us would be believed.
Sounds like you want an excuse to get all gussied up, my good man. :p

Please do not suddenly yell at the bears. They are sensitive creatures. But yes my first thought would probably be "Does it have cubs?" But no it wouldn't HAVE to have cubs, I wouldn't want to tangle with a bear while it was pregnant, nursing, or during any hormonally sensitive event in its life. Which for female bears is pretty dang often.

Also you mentioned how the bear might identify, but what about the human? How about a male human identifying as a strange female bear? I would find that very unsettling, though honestly a bit less threatening.

Your poll excluded many other factors as well, such as rabies infection. What if the bear had rabies? What if the strange man did? What if I personally am infected, in which case both man and bear ought to be afraid of ME?

I have determined there are too many variables to place an honest vote. Therefore I conclude with a quote from your very own post:

my poll will always be flawed.

Bear.
Man is evil.
Animals kill for food, territory, a mate or cubs. Mankind kills, tortures, hunts & hurts for evil pleasure; for their heart is evil continually. Gen.6:5

That assumes both man and bear intend to do you harm.

Nothing in the initial question allowed for that assumption.

Truth be I'd trust the bear over the man any day.

I gave my opinion, now you've interjected yours, but you are not the OP.

Are you the chat police?

I am a fellow forum member who mentioned a cogent point.

The chat police checks in twice a day and cleans up messes. I'm glad I am not he.

I think this covers both. Surely we could stretch a definition (or some fabric) and call a couple of those bears. And man, bear or both, they are kinda strange.

Social media is jumping with the following question: would you rather encounter a strange man or a bear in the woods?

I would love to hear any and all points of view, and I would hope that no one gets upset or defensive at any genuine response. I am not looking for any particular answer, just be honest.
Honestly I never want to encounter a bear in the woods or for that matter anywhere😅
not fond of strange men in the woods either considering some of my relatives live in wood like places don't think I want that sort of family reunion😅

If you meet a bear in the woods, it's not a strange bear. That's where a bear is supposed to be.

Meeting ME in the woods, now that would be strange. We invented walls and doors and stuff so we wouldn't have to be out in the woods any more. We developed a lot of barriers between us and outside. If you met me in the woods I would be a strange man, because I would be very out of place and wanting to get back indoors.

But strange or not, I'd rather meet a human than a bear. Bears I can predict and cannot outrun. Humans might be anything, and I have a chance of outrunning a random human.

If you go down to the woods today, you're in for a big surprise....
better than the swamps though I suppose not fit for man nor bear in there🥴
