I pray that my partners mother sees the light and finds God. She is 82 and in fragile health, her two sons want her to move from the house she is with bad neighbours, and get a flat that's better. I feel she is very weak, and will stay in the house she is. Its awful as we get older, I'm 48 and although I have disabilites myself I feel that even my fiance is getting older, after his stroke. He is 62. I pray that he copes with the stress better, and realize his mother won't change her ways and move. We just feel sorry for her, that's she's alone alot. I pray God brings some comfort to the family and that someone brightens her day. Amen

Now, we're in different continents, so it might be different over there, but something weird happens in Philly. Our neighborhoods change often, unless it's the historic district. (You just can't change historic buildings much. There's literally laws against that. lol)

But, if people stay in their homes, even after the neighborhood goes downhill, there is one type of person who is safe even in the worst or of slums. (And I worked right next to "the worst of our slums." We have a name for that particular slum -- The Bad Lands, because even bad guys fear to go in there.) But if an old person lives there, (and the definition of old is 70 or older -- and has to act old too, since some people are old but don't act it... I'm thinking of Mick Jagger lol), the neighbors will cause no harm to that person. It's to the point that there could be 25 houses on that one side of the street, and the old person lives in the second one from the corner. 24 houses will have graffiti on them, but the second one from the corner won't. And in a few years, most of those houses are boarded up, except for the second one from the corner. And one of those houses becomes a drug den, but even the junkies won't throw litter near that second house from the corner.

And people in the neighborhood will keep an eye out for the person in that house. If he/she doesn't come out of the house for 2-3 days, someone will knock to make sure that person is still okay. And if some groceries will help, groceries will come. And when weeds start cracking the sidewalk, someone will pull up those weeds.

I watched an entire block crumble in the course of the nine years that I worked across the street from the only heroin dealers in Philly. One day a bulldozer came and took down those decrepit houses. Much to my surprise that made the news the next night. I couldn't see her house from the angle outside my window, but an old woman lived on that block. The city supposedly checked to see if anyone lived in any of those houses, but they missed her. (She was hard of hearing.) She had walked to the grocery store that day, and when she tried to come home, she had no house. A neighbor let her stay at their house for the night. And the next day she made the news, because many neighbors took her to City Hall to demand the city give her a new home.

It made the news, so they did.

And that was the same neighborhood where a gang of 8-12 year olds threw rocks at my car when I was at work. (I have that same car. I think I have the only car with dents on all sides, including the top. lol) My bosses had to replace a window once, because the kids broke it. On another night, when I stayed a mere 15 minutes late, they surrounded my car trying to pull me out and hurt me. (My boss came out. He was a big man, so they ran away.) Why were those kids mad at me? I think they thought I was part of the family that owned the business. Besides, I was only in my 40's, so I was far game. The guy who taught me the job before he retired was in his 70's. He was frail looking, (but definitely NOT frail lol), so they didn't go after him.

There is some kind of code over here where even the bad guys don't mess with old people... unless the old person is

If it's the same over there, she should be safe where she is.
