Please pray for the family of Nathan Griffin, who was shot and killed after robbing the Vermont State Employees Credit Union on Tuesday. He fled across the road to Montpelier High School, where NINE cops and State Troopers shot him, then jumped on him after he went down. The state troopers and MPD cops are all on paid leave, pending an investigation into their actions. Nathan did have a BB gun on him, but was it really necessary for NINE officers to open fire on him?

I didn't know Nathan, but Montpelier High School is just down the street from me. Sad that he got killed on the grounds of the same high school that he attended as a teenager.

Lessee ... armed robbery, followed by running towards 9 cops with a gun in your hand. True, it's unreasonable that all nine unloaded on him, but can you really feign surprise when scorpions do what scorpions do?

Praying for his family. They are the innocents in this drama.

He wasn't running toward the cops. He was only holding the gun. THEY opened fire on HIM, then jumped on him after he went down and was dead.. Sounds more to me like the cops were the "scorpions" in this case..

Sounds like he ran towards the cops

And yes the cops would be the scorpions. And just like the tale of the frog and the scorpion, you can't run in a cop's direction holding a gun without, um, 'gaining weight'. (From all the lead).

I don't understand why every cop on scene has to unload their clip on a perp, or shoot to kill. Seems to me a supervisor on scene should appoint 2 or 3 to be the shooters, with the first shots aimed to stop and down a perp without killing them. But this situation didn't really give them time to come up with such a plan.

Oh I don't know, maybe the robber should have stopped while the supervisor appointed a cop to shoot him.

I think blue ladybug needs to get a job as a police officer, and show them all how it's done.

Which one of you brave people would have holstered his/her firearm, and trust that someone else would take care of you as a man raised a gun in your direction?

True, this scenario left no time for that. But if there is time for a supervisor to make such a call they should. With 9 cops on scene, if you had the time to pick 3 shooters, you should.

No way. Nine pistols, nine shots... at a minimum.

I was a firefighter EMT for 35 years. I worked right alongside my brothers in blue for all those years. I have friends and family who are/were in law enforcement. I have looked down the barrel of a gun in the streets. Among a whooole host of other things.

There's not enough money in the world to pay me to be a cop. They get microseconds to make decisions that will affect the rest of their - and everyone attached's -lives. And even when you do the right thing there's always someone saying it was the wrong thing. Nope, no thank you, wouldn't want that job, God Bless the brave men who do.

But, then again, there are people who say the same ting about what I do. Except the everyone hating you part.

We do the best we can with the information we have and the time on the clock. We don't always get it square, but if we learn from the mistakes we are smarter and better prepared to hopefully not kill the next guy.

And yes Willie, I'm with you there... out of 9 cops, make it 3 shooters and whoever he's pointing at.

So while I was writing that Wilie posted again.

My friend, what has happened to your love for humanity? Your heart is so cold and hard. Have you taken on the traits of your environment?

Praying for you, my adversary ;)

Absolutely. You're very welcome, RickyZ.

I grew up near a town where, unfortunately, cases like this were common. It always raised high emotions and fueled racial tensions, because, while it was a tragedy that someone was killed, the perpetrators often had criminal records the size of phone books, which was a fact that was often ignored in the press.

I'm sad to read that anyone's family would have to suffer a great loss from such circumstances.

But I have nothing but respect for the men and women who put their own lives on the line everyday in order to try to protect others.

I don't mean to call anyone stupid, but..... If, of your sweetly selected "three shooters", one missed, one was not in a position to get a shot, and the remaining one only hit him superficially.... the moment he had been raising a real gun at any one of you bleeding hearts, you could very well be very dead right now.

Officers are not out there to play "Wild West", and see who is faster, them or the criminal.

If your robber is on drugs, as many of these individuals are, you need more bullets.

And let's see how accurate you can shoot if the target can shoot back. "Combat high" will throw your aim off.

I imagine 90% of these "high talkers" have never even fired a pistol, let alone at another human under the stressful conditions of being fired at themselves. Conditions that are faced by officers all the time.

Seriously though, none of us was there, and none of us knows what happened in the heat of that incident.
