Unfortunately, due to the health care law the IRS has hired tons of new staff, and are really cracking down. :(

My sister is a CPA, and her first job out of college was as an auditor for the IRS. (we banned her from the family as a traitor! JK!! lol)
She worked for them for 10 years before starting her own business, soo...here's what she says:

If you call them, they're usually pretty helpful. If you have extenuating circumstances, they'll lift the lien--immediately.
And there's a thing called an "offer in compromise", which is what all the tax assistance people are there to do for you. I don't know how much time you have, but you could do it yourself and save the $$. The IRS will even help with the paperwork. Contact (go to) your local IRS office--they have everything you'd need, and typically they're pretty nice. They WANT to help you pay your taxes. :)

She says definitely speak to IRS yourself before paying a lawyer all that money!

I have prayed for you! Hope all goes well.

This is what I asked the state tax man. There was a man on tv who said, that the main reason there were penalties & interest is for people who don't keep filing taxes every year & just quits & gives up & runs. He said those who continue to file, who aren't running or avoiding. He said usually the tax people (you) will wave the fees. Is this true, can the interest & penalties be waved?
This is what he said, "Penalties are rarely waived unless its the states error. Interest can be waived if there is a reasonable cause from the taxpayer. You would need to have the amount of the original tax paid in full, then submit a waiver request".
To get any kind of help an attorney wants 5000 to 7500 on top of what you can settle with. I don't have anything accests except 4 a broken down home in which I paid way to much, its falling apart faster than I can keep up with. I don't know how much longer I can keep patching up my vehicle to get the most out of it. Bottome line: an attorney said, they won't leave you alone. They can & will continue to put u through this until they get some money. Jesus said, pay to Ceaser what Ceasers & pay to God what God. He also provided them with what they needed to pay Ceaser off. 10,000 which is now 17,000 for the state. 40,000 which is for federal. I believe in God & I know he is greater & I know he can & wants to help me put an end to this once & for all. Its not his will for me to continue to live this way & I can't. I understand why people quit & walk out. I've begged God to take me home & he refuses. You know what he says? Phil Chapter 4: I know its better to be here with me but you have a need to be in the flesh. I"m not suicidal but I am however so understanding of how people quit, give up, walk away, run etc. I need to see Him like I never have before. He our deliever! I just don't know what to do.
God bless you all, thank you for your love & support & prayers.

I am so sorry to hear of these trials, and can understand how you would feel almost buried by them. :(
I don't know where you live, so I can't speak to the state tax issue, but I do know that IRS will look at your income and expenses and they have some kind of "compassion" thing, where they basically recognize your inabilty to pay and put your case on hold, and although interest accrues, you don't have to do anything, and they leave you alone till your situation changes. If the federal gov't can do this...perhaps the state can as well?
I pray this helps you in some way.

Debt is a terrible burden, and I will keep seeking the Lord for strength and peace for you, and for a permanent solution.
Don't forget that your Father is rich beyond compare, and you are joint heir with Christ! :)

Lord bless you!
