I started a thread to celebrate the birthday of our Lord Jesus Christ by giving out rep points to those who wanted to celebrate with me by posting in that thread. LINK What could be the harm in that, I thought? I mean, Christmas, birth of Christ—good right? Well, now that thread is locked, apparently in response to *this* thread complaining about it.
..
It surprises me that anyone on a Christian website would be so base as to complain about a thread celebrating Christmas.
.
But it surprises me even more that a mod on this site would listen to that complain and lock the Christmas rep thread. This is insightful to me as to what this message board stands for. Or rather, what CC does not stand for.
.
That is all.

Seriously though, what does one benefit for lots of reps? or likes? I honestly don't understand the significance. Can someone please explain? I mean, other than someone giving you a virtual nod of agreement, is it points for generating additional interest in a particular thread... or accolades for exhibiting wisdom in a certain subject matter... a personality contest... or what?
That's easy for you to say, as I can see you have less rep power than I. When you get to MY level you will understand what rep power is all about.

Kidding, of course. (Please don't hit me!)

Rep points system is a good idea, but it doesn't work in the real world because people are people. So we have to fall back on what we always do in real life - join a community, learn who people are by what they talk about and make our decisions about who we can trust on what topics. Sure it would be nice if a new person could just hop right in, look at the rep bars people have and automatically know who to listen to for advice, but even before I figured out how the rep system works I never gave it much credence because anybody can rep anybody for anything. And even before I noticed there IS a rep system I was already forming opinions about who is a straight shooter, who is a bit of a smart-alec, who is a joker... by reading what they said in forum threads.

For the record, if you haven't noticed, I'm one of the smart-alecs. Just so you know.

I guess people who care about reps feel it was unfair.I dont care about reps,I do enjoy the messages when people leave them. I never considered them, people who see the Bible from you POV will rep you, people who don't won't.Not a big deal. But perhaps it is to some.

Weeellll...

Shucky Doodles.

I was just working on a thread/poll idea about humorous things we could all trade our rep points in for (anyone want a unicorn?), or maybe it would be like a Chuck E. Cheese where you can play games at the arcade ALL night, then go cash in your 100,000 tickets... and find out that it qualifies for a pencil eraser--but not the actual pencil--are you crazy??!!--c'mon now, the pencil will cost you another 200,000 tickets. Duh.

However, seeing as this seems to have turned into a heated subject, I shall now shred my list of ideas and abandon future thread.

Alas... why do I suddenly have the urge to play Skee-Ball...

To me, this would be the perfect date. (Just don't expect me to make any of the 100-point moneyballs...)

Prov's thread was for giving Christmas reps. Nothing wrong with that. :) But Joe's thread, while done in good intentions, practically screamed "free rep for nothing"..I could care less about reps, in fact I have no clue how many powers I currently have because I hardly ever look at them. And I'm pretty sure that Zero, who started this thread, could probably care less about reps as well. Despite what anyone thinks, Joe's thread in particular was an abuse of the rep system.. Ask a mod and they'll tell you the same, I'm sure.

Judging by all the anti-Christmas threads and posts on this site I'm not sure what's so surprising.
But, really, it likely was shut down for being a free rep thread, not a Christmas thread. Don't be such a martyr.

You started it with good intentions, and that's all that should matter. :) No one is being "base" (what does that even mean). You wanted to give Christmas reps, that's fine because at Christmas, many of us DO give and receive reps. What I (and probably Zero) took exception to was the fact that Joe's thread in particular, was created basically to get free reps and likes--hence the title of it. If people can't see that as an abuse of the rep system, then they need to open their eyes.

I knew those two threads would get closed, because all the other "get rep" threads that people have made in previous years have all also been closed. I'm sure the mods don't mind us getting or giving rep, but they obviously DO mind it being abused.

Closing your thread had nothing to do with celebrating Christmas. That you're attempting to make it appear as the cause is unfounded and frankly disingenuous on your part.

So if the management is going to be enforcing a Socialist Rep Power System, how will that work, exactly?

So Instead of repping individuals, will we be clicking a button and then seeing a friendly notice such as: "Greetings, Fellow Comrade. Thank you for doing your part in contributing to the CC Community Fair-For-All Rep System.

Peace, Bread, and Rep Points (For All!)"
Equal reps for an equals day of post.

I hereby declare the rep system an evil capitalist scam to exploit our comrades.

I will accept the peoples call for a new dictator, err, I mean a democratically elected person representing the people and take responsibility for the sake of the Nation.

Well yeah the thread title, was a bit on the "get a like or rep" side for no reason,I had doubts when making the thread that it would last, but kind of glad from both threads,to "find out" about people here as was my "main" intention, now I know who are petty and who sincerely "try when given a challenge, and who "appreciates" likes and reps,Christmas is a time of "humbling" through these threads me and Prov have stirred such humbleness in others, some bad some good, that to me is of value.

My 2 cents:
(Sometimes my 2 cents is probably only worth half that... but it's all I've got.)

I have no problem with joefizz, or any of his friends.
I don't think joe has any bad intentions.

I imagine that with good intentions, he probably did something he didn't realize he was doing.
And what was that thing?
It was to accidentally "devalue" reps... which is one of the few gifts we can give people on the forum.

If you can get easily get virtually unlimited reps,
then how valuable now is your GIFT of a rep to someone?
It no longer has any value.

It's like cheesecake.
If I have no cheesecake, and you give me a slice of cheesecake on my birthday, it's a wonderful gift.
But if I have 10 warehouses full of cheesecake, and you give me a slice of cheesecake on my birthday, I'm just going to think you're touched in the head.
A mere slice of cheesecake would just no longer have any value to me.

So, this is the real problem with starting threads for reps.
It would, in time, devalue this small but special gift we give to people on the forum.

If we want our gift to be special, and valuable...
then we don't want to accidentally devalue it.

When we give someone a gift, it's nice if that little gift is special.

I have no problem with joefizz at all.
I think he's a very nice guy; I'm sure he just never looked at things this way.

So, basically you're saying he's like the German Emperor Wilhelm II?

Maybe we can start borrowing reps, like good ole Wilhelm borrowed Reichsmark?
