Sweet potato Pie
This story goes back 27 years when I lived in the little Town of Brunswick Tennessee. All there was in the center of town was a General Store. It was a small family owned store as they all were back then.
I would go there for lunch, milk, bread stuff like that. When I went in I would sweep the floor, mop in the winter snow, and mud days. Back then I had to do things to show that I was a "good person." Sometimes the owner would give me a cup of coffee or a sandwich to show his appreciation.
One day their only employee was making sweet potato pies. Carol is a sweet lady and her pies were great. It was a Wednesday and I had pot luck dinner at Church that night. So I asked Carol to make me 3 pies. She said "No Problem you can pick them up this afternoon".
I went back that afternoon to get the pies. I got my pies and Carol added them up and said the owner wanted $28.00 for the pies.. I blew up. How dare he charge me full price for these pies after all the work I had done for him. I threw the $28.00 on the counter took my pies. I stopped at the pay phone outside and called the owner. I told him he was a %$@!*^% and I would never set foot in his store again. Slammed the phone down and went on to my self=righteous pot luck dinner.
About a half hour into the dinner the store owner shows up. I went out in the parking lot to give him heck. You %^$@#! ungrateful %$#@$ why did you charge me so much for those pies.( In the Church parking lot with some other men looking on). You should have at least charged me cost on the pies.
He got out of his truck and stood up tall and said" I didn't know the pies were for you. I would have given them to you, nevernind the cost".
Three days later I crawled out from under my self imposed manure pile and apologized for my actions, and we laughed about it.
I learned for myself that if I am going to do something or volunteer. It isn't real unless there are no strings attached. If I am going to give something away or give of myself it has to be freely given. With no hidden demands.
I have found myself getting caught up with demands from the brothers and sisters lately. Wanting folks to change faster. Expecting folks to "Get It" because I said so.
Forgot about me sweet potato pie.
