Here's a little something I wrote for all you lovely ladies. Before you start reading, go get your Kleenex.
A Child of God

It was early April in Rochester, New York. It had been a long, hard winter; spring was now in the air. Those who live by Lake Erie or Lake Ontario at times become weary of the cold, snow, and ice storms that blow down from Canada. But many upstate New Yorkers put up with the cold because of family ties or their job.

Larry Jenson and his wife Anna are one of these; both were born in Rochester and married for five years. When they moved into their new home, they joined a local church. Both felt blessed that they had found so many wonderful and helpful friends. Pastor Bart and Larry became good friends, as did their wives. Larry and Anna had a wonderful marriage:’ A marriage made in heaven.’

Two years earlier, Anna had given birth to their first child, a little girl they named Julia, naming her after Larry’s mother. Anna had just finished vacuuming the living room when she looked over at her daughter and saw that she was beginning to fall asleep. She shut the cleaner off, walked over to her, picked her up, and set her in the crib. Her eyelids were closed over her beautiful blue eyes, her mouth barely parted, her cheeks rosy, and her soft, light brown hair lay across her forehead. There she lies alone, no one watching but the Lord.

The child slept for about an hour when she woke. But instead of crying because she was alone, the thing a mother would expect a child to do, she rose to her knees in the crib, stood, and looked around the room.

Anna and Larry had decided to paint the baby’s room and then put a decretive four-inch floral wallpaper border where the wall and ceiling meet. When Larry finished painting, he took a six-foot ladder and began putting up the border. It was self-sticking, so completing the job took less than an hour. When finished, He set his broad knife and utility blade on the baby’s dresser. He took the ladder back to the garage and was returning to the bedroom for his tools when the phone rang.

It was a customer Larry had been speaking to concerning an outdoor deck. The homeowner desired to replace the old deck on his lake house. When Larry finished, he told his wife he had to leave for an hour to meet with this new customer and sign a contract.

“Okay, hon, we’ll have supper about five; drive carefully.”

“See you in a few hours, love you.”

Little Julie leaned over the back side of her crib as far as she could and took the utility knife from the dresser. Somehow, she had slid the blade up just enough to expose it. She began playing with the knife, waving it around before her. Suddenly, it cut through her left wrist, and the blood started to flow down her little hand onto the sheets of her crib. Little Julie became frightened when she saw the red of the blood coming from her wrist. Instead of crying out, she quietly laid her head on the pillow and fell asleep with the knife by her side.

All the while, Anna was in the kitchen, having just finished preparing supper for the family. Looking out the kitchen window, she saw Larry coming up the drive. He parked in the driveway and entered the house through the garage. “Hi, hon. How’d your meeting go?” Anna asked.

“Great, we signed the contract.” Larry took the contract from his pocket and said, “We closed a deal with Mr. Stanford to remove his old deck in the back of his house and replace it with a new one. His home sits on a lake and has an upper and lower deck. It’s a pretty big job. This time, he wants the deck to wrap around the back of the house.” He has also decided to have two stair-wells going from the upper to lower deck, one on each side of the house.”

“That’s great hon,” Anna replied.

“By the way, how was your day?” Larry asked.

Anna smiled, kissed her man, and said, “It was wonderful, busy as usual.”

Looking around the room, he asked, “Where’s Julie?”

“She’s taking a nap.” Looking up at the kitchen clock, she said, “It’s about time for her to get up.” As Larry entered the front room, Anna said, “Dinner will be ready in half an hour.”

“Okay hon, going to watch the nightly news for a few minutes, then I’ll get Julie up, okay?”

He walked over to his favorite chair and was ready to sit when the front doorbell rang. “I’ll get it,” Larry said. He walked over to the door, opened it, and saw two young men standing there. “Can I help you?”

“Sir, do you have a little girl?”

Baffled, Larry looked at the two men, “Yes, I do, why?”

“Your daughter needs you now!”

Startled by their comments, he said nothing.”

Anna came to the door, “What is it, Larry?”

Suddenly, a feeling of urgency and panic came over Larry; he knew something was wrong. He ran to the bedroom of his precious little girl, opened the door, and saw her lying in a pool of blood. He shouted, “Ann, call 911.”

Ann ran to the bedroom and saw what no parent would ever want to witness. She ran to the phone and dialed 911. Larry stopped the bleeding, but his baby was barely breathing and not responding. All the color had gone from her face; Larry knew every second would be critical. An ambulance arrived within ten minutes and rushed her to the hospital. Larry and Anna followed in their car, praying to the Lord to save their baby.

Waiting for some news, after several hours, the doctor came to where they were sitting. He smiled, “Your baby is doing fine.”

“Thank God,” Anna said.

“If you had waited five minutes longer, your daughter would not have made it. We suggest you leave her here for several days, being so young, it’s better we have her under continuous observation.”

“That will be fine doctor, my wife and I can’t thank you enough.”

“Glad I was able to help.”

The two stayed for several more hours. The nurse told them Julie was resting comfortably; it would be wise for them to return home and get some rest. The following morning, they were both up early. Ann had already made a pot of coffee when Larry entered the kitchen. Would you like something to eat?”

“No thanks, not hungry. How could I have been so foolish to leave that knife so close to her crib.”

“Hon, it’s okay. When your customer called it distracted you, sometimes we get so busy, so distracted, things like this happen. As long as Julie is doing well, all we can do is be thankful that the Lord was watching over her.”

Suddenly, it dawned on both, remembering the two men at the door; if it weren’t for them, Julie would never have made it. Ann looked at her husband. Larry immediately knew what she was thinking, her thoughts mirroring his. God had sent the two men to save their child. Humbled by their thoughts, Larry said, “Two men sent by God to save our baby.”

They loved Julie dearly before, but now she was more precious than ever. The Lord brought her back from death and gave her life back to Larry and Anna because of his loving care and concern for his own.
