That would be confusing. What if "John" says something terrible and then change his name to "Pete"?

I believe names CAN be changed, by moderators, under very specific conditions.

Users can have their names changed by Admin. for a fee. Other than that we do not permit it for the reason already given. If users could change their own nic it would become a nightmare trying to keep track of who was who when it comes to trouble makers.

The aforementioned reasoning for not permitting altering a registered alias/account name is creditable, and largely the reason why a good many social media sites don't allow it anyway. The fee is rather miniscule, if you really want it done, however.
