I think 40 with respect to Biblical generations/genealogy also can be used to denote, in general, an 'unknown number'. I am a (non-professional) genealogist (for almost 40 years). Based on the standard number of years used for a generation; namely, 20, if you do the math, it just doesn't add up correctly with respect to historical time. In short, there are a considerable number of generations missing (typically "filled in" by assigning people inordinately long lifespans).

Yes I agree, the generations wasn't to be of exact order of historical account, they are a symbolic account, and there is info that can be known by learning of them.

the order in the bible is somewhat read like a tree, start on the left side of the tree branches with King David through Solomon a son of David to Joseph husband of Mary, around the top of the tree to Heli/Eli then the right side of the tree branches back to Nathan a son of David, down the tree trunk to Adam.

It could also be noted that times of peace for Israel in the Book of Judges came in increments of 40 years.

speaking of books, this might be minuscule but the book of Exodus has 40 chapters. Thought that is interesting since on the subject of 40, lol

the number 40 is mentioned 146 times in scripture,

Saul, David and Solomon, each ruled for forty years (1050 to 930 B.C.). After the united kingdom split into two separate pieces, King Joash served forty years as one of Judah's better kings.
