Arrested real estate heir Robert Durst caught saying he 'killed them all' in HBO documentary

Real estate heir Robert Durst was arrested Saturday in New Orleans on murder charges the night before an HBO documentary broadcast audio of him muttering "What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course."

Durst, 71, was arrested by FBI agents at a J.W. Marriott hotel for the 2000 murder of Susan Berman in her Beverly Hills, Calif. home, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said.
Berman, whom Durst had known since his grad school days, was merely the latest in a series of murders in which Durst has been a suspect. The HBO documentary has been five years in the making, detailing the odd legacy of Durst, who has beaten one murder charge for the death of Morris Black in Galveston, Texas by claiming self-defense, even though the body was dismembered expertly and the tiny pieces thrown in Galveston Bay.

Durst has long been thought responsible for at least two other murders. He has now been arrested for Berman's death. Another case still stands open. Fox News hostess and former prosecutor and judge Janine Pirro had reopened a cold case on Durst in 2000, regarding the disappearance of his wife, Kathie, in 1982. Despite strong circumstantial evidence, neither Pirro nor her predecessors had been able to bring charges. Police believe Berman was killed to keep her from talking to Pirro about his missing wife.

His saga is bizarre, to say the least. He went into hiding after the Black murder, jumping a $1 billion -- yes, "billion" with a "B" -- but was caught in Pennsylvania shoplifting a sandwich and some Band-Aids. He was originally in Galveston after Pirro reopened the case of missing and presumed dead wife, disguising himself as a deaf-mute woman living in a $300-a-month rooming house. He also was caught shoplifting a sandwich there, exposing his disguise. He was arrested last year in Houston for urinating on approximately $100 of candy bars in a convenience store. He couldn't give police a reason for his strange crime.

The words he spoke into the open mic were not discovered for nearly two years by the film crew, until more editors were brought in to prepare the documentary for air. It was then they found the chilling, rambling "confession' as Durst talked to himself in the bathroom after his interview with filmmaker Andrew Jarecki:

"There it is. You're caught. What a disaster. What the hell did I do? Killed 'em all, of course."

This was after Jarecki had confronted him with an envelope addressed merely "Beverley Hills Police," the misspelling matching another envelope he had addressed years before to his alleged victim, on on which he had included his return address.

His attorneys told him not to do the show. His family told him not to do the show. He's such an egomaniac, he thought he could do the show and walk away unscathed.

Perhaps the best lesson to be learned from his escapade is, if you're hooked to a live wireless mic, don't mutter to yourself in the bathroom!

His plight only grows worse. He was arrested in the possession of what may be an illegally registered .38 Smith & Wesson handgun in New Orleans, which the D.A. there may charge him with, and late this afternoon, the L.A. County D.A. formally charged him with the murder of Susan Berman.

The only thing that sucks is the fact that they cannot get him for the one murder because of double jeopardy right?

This guy has gotten away three times.........................and could do it again............the murder charges are not fool proof. California jury...................can you say OJ Simpson?

Anyway, talking heads on FNC are upset about New Orleans considering trying him for the weapons violation he was arrested on. Said conviction would result in 10 years in a Louisiana Prison. I say GO FOR IT guys! At least this guy will be in jail....and BTW, there is NO Statute of Limitations on Murder...........so LA could get him after he serves his time in Louisiana.

Seems like a win---------win to me

I agree and thought the same thing...plus at his age...10 years in the joint might not be survivable.....!

Maybe we're jumping to conclusions about this guy.

Just because you chop somebody up into little pieces and toss them into the bay...
hey, that doesn't mean it wasn't self defense.

Geesh.

Right. But they have what amounts to a good solid, though circumstantial, case in California, and maybe they can find something to link him to his wife's murder 33 years ago.

Kudos to former D.A. and district judge Jeanine Pirro, who flushed this guy out in 2000 by reopening the cold case on the missing wife, Kathie, when Pirro was the district attorney in Westchester County, New York. Had she not reopened that case, he would have remained as anonymous as a serial-killer billionaire could remain.
