"In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you." (Titus 2:7-8)

According to these verses of Scripture, we, as Christians, need to be very careful with our mouths because we will one day give account to God. Most Christians are aware of the fact that God expects them to live holy lives. Likewise, most God-fearing Christians have learned to abstain from swearing and from the use of common profanity. I haven't met many faithful Christians who have a problem with worldly cursing. However, I have met MANY Christians who have stumbled into the Devil's trap and taken up a whole different kind of cursing. Keep reading, friend, because you just might need to "tune up" your vocabulary!

Are You Taking God's Name in Vain?

You say, "Well, my word! I wouldn't take God's name in vain!" You just did! John 1:1 says that "the Word" was GOD! Satan tricked you, didn't he? You need to CONFESS to God that you've been taking His name in vain, and you need to REPENT of this sin!

"Well, my goodness!", you say. If you are saved then your "goodness" is none other than God Himself (Psalm 144:2). You just took His name in vain again. You have no goodness of your own (Isa. 64:6; Rom. 3:23; Psa. 39:5), so "my goodness" is a reference to God!

"Good grief! I had no idea!" There you go again! Jesus Christ was a man of sorrows and acquainted with GRIEF (Isa. 53:3). His grief was "good" grief because He bore your sins. You should show more reverence and respect for your Saviour and quit throwing God's word around too loosely.

"For crying out loud! Can't I say anything?" How about reading your Bible for a change?! Matthew 27:46 says that when your Saviour was suffering on the cross He "cried with a loud voice." What's your logic in using such speech? Could it be that Satan is just having a good laugh at your ignorance and disrespect of God's word?
"Well, geeeeeeee!" Did you say "G", as in "GOD"? Yes, you certainly did! You've also said "Gosh" and "Good Golly"! You've also said "Jeepers Creepers" when you really wanted to say "Jesus Christ" (JC!). You've also played around with the letters "G" and "D" together. You said "dad gum" and "dog gone" when you really wanted to say "God" and then follow with the word "damn". Think about it, Christian! Is God pleased with this kind of speech?

Those Four-Letter Words!

You probably wouldn't think of using the word "damn" too loosely, but what about "darn" and "dang"? Do they not serve the same purpose? Is Satan not pleased to fill your mouth with such speech?
"Why, heck!" Look out there! God knows your heart, and he knows you really wanted to say "hell".
Down south folks say, "Ah, shoot!" This is nothing more than a cheap way of saying "s " Again I ask, is God pleased with this sort of speech? Is this "sound speech, that cannot be condemned"? I think not!

Swear Not!

"But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil." (Mat. 5:34-37)

Jesus said "swear not," yet God's people swear all the time! Such expressions as "for Heaven's sake", "for Pete's sake", and "Heavens to Betsy" are attempts to swear by Bible subjects, which shows disrespect toward God. God's word is PURE and HOLY! We should HONOR His words, not throw them around like a dirty dish rag!

Truth Is All the Authority You Need

Why do people curse and swear? There's only one reason: authority. People want to sound forceful and authoritative when they speak, so they spice their speech up with all sorts of catchy little "power words". Unfortunately, such words often dishonor God, the Bible, and the Lord Jesus Christ. Friend, TRUTH is all of the authority you need. Just speak the truth as it is revealed in God's word and you'll have no use for "Christian cursing".

Remember: "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment." (Mat. 12:36)

James 1:26
Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.
James 1:27
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

The tongue, though a small organ of the body, can cause great havoc, as such it's important to learn to tame the tongue. Bad language is widespread amongst kids; they love parroting whatever they hear that's why one ought to be careful what they say around them as well as the kind of people they associate with. TV is another culprit for bad language...

God knows our heart, that's important to know, so, what's your heart telling you when you say something out of your mouth ?

Do not say the Lord God's name in vain is a commandment. And, although some of the things said by chosenHim can sound extreme, what is at issue here is NOT your words, and, certainly, NOT your salvation(is it?), but your right relationship with God. When we all get to heaven what a day, what a glorious day that will be, we want it to be 'right.' :)

starryfields says, 'tame the tongue,' and, she is most right, it's in Scripture, but, maybe, not how you might think, at least, not from what James says here:

"For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed of mankind: 8But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. …"

It's all a matter of the heart, so, be ye careful with what speech comes out of your mouth, and, we are to be 'light' to the world, and, my question is this, how much light can we shine of Jesus in us when we have 'darkness' coming out of us, for James gives a great definition of the tongue.

Tongue=unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

Now, one can think, 'Well, when I say a swear word, it's not that bad, green,' I don't mean anything by saying 'Gee, why didn't I think of that.' But, what is your context of your even speaking a phrase like that, is it sarcastic, or, is it said in love. Certainly, IF it's sarcastic, it's more inclined to come out wrong to people and that could influence their faith, especially if that person already KNOWS your faith. Do NOTHING to cause a brother to stumble, and, do you think a careless 'swear' could? Yes, this is not a rhetorical question, it CAN.

Moralist? Tribers. Not one bit. Scripture is fraught (much more than James, and, chosenHim listed many good verses) with examples of the tongue being deadly,

We should utter words that praise the Lord, I think David touches on this a time or two in his Psalms He inspired David to write. So, the simple question is this, is your cursing--"Whoa! Green, it's not cursing when I just say 'darn' when something goes wrong in my life, I am not directing that 'darn' at God."

You're not? Good, or, great rather, but, who around you, hears that, and, what are they thinking. Ah, yes, Christ peeps, in our lives as chosen Christians by Him that we CHOOSE to follow His ways we should always measure out the words from our lips; they should ALWAYS, as much as we humanly can do ,through His power in us (Phil. 4:13) speak of Love :)

Some reference, I pray it's wisdom for you, it should be it's from Solomon, who is God's wisest one in all of Scripture, no? :)

My son, if you accept my wordsand store up my commands within you,
2turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—
3indeed, if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,
4and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
6For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7He holds success in store for the upright,
he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,

8for he guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.

Meditate on this , what is this proverb excerpt saying, especially the underlined words :)

And, another, from Solomon's wise proverbs, it speaks of mocking God, is your 'swearing' something "I just can't contain it, gosh darn it,' or, is it heartily done, to show, like chosenHim said, an 'authority' over things. And, if you are having an authority over things is that not, in a very real sense, your wanting to say you have an authority over God in something, or, just want this ONE bit of something. "I can't have porn, I can't have drugs, I want this one thing, swearing, so I will HAVE it." The Lord leads :) But, is that you? Guess what, if it is, YOU got nothing even when you THINK you got something, God is in complete and utter control, so, quit thinking those thoughts, YOU are NOT ever in control of God, in your goodness or your choice for wickedness, God is in control. Scipture does say that God has plans for us all, even an end to the wicked. Scary stuff, huh? And, I swear (by the holy book of the bible) that THAT is true, this I hope and pray, what words come out of my mouth here to TEACH and SHOW should do one thing: have Him now reVEAL Himself to you Dear Lord...amen :)

He mocks proud mockersbut shows favor to the humble and oppressed.
35The wise inherit honor,
but fools get only shame.

Put yourself in the game of Love toward God and you will not be forcing blame on yourself, or, worse yet, shame, and, Christ peeps, God NEVER wants you to feel shame in your game of following Him, that would be Satan who wants that . So, do things, and, certainly, make it a point to say things that bring glory, and, honor, and, praise to Him every time you utter a word.

"Green, that's friggin impossible ! "

Is it ? Do you remember the mention of Phil. 4:13? Maybe, you need a refresher on what it says :)

"I can do all things through Christ who gives me the strength." His power, your movement. Just move, He will EMpower you to do whatever you heartfelt, wholeheartedly give to Him, through praying, through His Word speaking to you, yep, He will, His Word NEVER comes back void, and, yep, I swear (by my hand on the bible, no expletives of any 'vain' unGodly form), "that" ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ is Scripture too. :)

We need to be careful with our words but these examples are just silly.
Tintin,

No they are not silly at all.

The very definition of IDLE shows that these examples are right on:

IDLE: - (Adjective)

1). Not working or active. Doing nothing.
2). Not spent or filled with activity.
3). Of no real worth, importance, or significance. Idle Talk.

IN VAIN:

1) Without effect or avail; to no purpose.

2) In an improper or irrelevant manner: to take God's name in vain.

Saying God's name in an irrelevant or empty manner is taking His name in vain. God's name should not be used disrespectfully. Also, when people say "oh my word!" that is also taking His name in vain.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the Word and His name is the Word of God:
13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. - Revelation 19:13 (King James Bible)

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. - John 1:1 (King James Bible)

14
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. - John 1:14 (King James Bible)

7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. - 1 John 5:7 (King James Bible)

11 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. - Deuteronomy 5:11 (King James Bible)

Not only should you not carelessly use God's name, but you also should not carelessly and nonchalantly use and mention Biblical terms. And Biblical terms that are attributed to God's character and nature, and that describe His spiritual Kingdom and main dwelling place. Bible Words such as: word, good, goodness, Heaven, and so forth.

And also, if you are carelessly using words that mean the same thing, it still counts as an idle word.

For Example:

DANG (Trasitive Verb)

: Damn

Euphemism for DAMN.

"Dang" is basically a euphemism and slang word for "Damn."

And how about "Golly?"

GOLLY (Interjection)

Origin of Golly

Euphemism for God

First known use 1775.

So again, Brother James Melton's examples are right on.
