sun tanning is unhealthy for our bodies...there are tons of things that are, soda, cookies, candy. Yet I dont see anyhone whining about those. Why because they arent a huge deal. Neither are cigarettes. If you feel strongly against them then thats fine dont smoke. But remember not everyone feels the same.

I believe in your walk with the Lord, that he will teach you that smoking is a sin.

From purely a logical point of view, what defense is there for smoking? Cigarettes are addictive and kill regularly, in more than one way, while serving no purpose.

Not to sound rude, but I am tired of every time I turn around something is a sin. Honestly everything in this world could be viewed as a sin if you want it to be. Jobs cause stress, stress is harmful. Hobbies consume our time, time we could spend with the lord. Junk food is unhealthy. Drugs can harm you. Alcohol can harm you. The sun can harm you. Lack of sleep can harm. This list can go on and on. My point is that if you keep focusing on identifying every little thing we do as a sin, then how can you live your life?

11 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”

2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say:

Our Father in heaven,[a]
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins,
For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.”

God expects us to screw up which is why forgiveness is included in the prayer that Jesus taught. I personally don't know that I see it as a sin and if it is I don't think God would worry about it unless it was taking over your life to the point you were pushing Him aside. Also let me say I know the effects of smoking. My grandmother had pneumonia multiple times from smoking, she had to stay on oxygen, she had COPD, she went on life support and majority of this came from her smoking.

I hope I did not offend anyone with my post. I just wanted to contribute to the discussion. I don't normally format my words in that way, but since the title asked about sin specifically, that's how I formed the answer. I don't judge people who smoke. I am easygoing around people with bad habits because I have many of my own and I understand. (I just may not want to sit by you while you smoke. :p)

On the smoker's defense, perhaps they smoke to keep themselves busy so that they do not do worse sins in that time of their life.

Sometimes life is stressful. Especially if you are growing really fast spiritually. There is sometimes nothing more painful.

YES IT IS, IF YOU WILLING PUT A HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE INTO YOUR BODY, I DON'T BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE A BELIEVER, OR ARE ON THE VERGE OF SELF DESTRUCTION. YOU LOVE CIGARETTES MORE THAN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, WHO SAYS THE BODY IS A TEMPLE AND HE RESIDES IN IT. NO WONDER JESUS OVERTURNED THE TABLES WHAT THEY WERE DOING IN HIS HOUSE , TEMPLE, EVERYTHING BUT PRAYING. YOU SERVE ANOTHER MASTER. ALSO, I COULD SMELL THE OFFENSE OF SOMEONES SPEECH WHO SMOKES, IT MIGHT BE THE PARTING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, AND LOSS OF CONNECTION. I WOULD NOT WANT SOMEONE PREACHING TO ME OR TALKING TO ME WITH A BUTT HANGING OUT OF YOUR MOUTH. THEIR IS NO DIFFERANCE WITH SOME THAN WITH THE WORLD. I KNOW SOME SO CALLED CHRISTIANS WHO SMOKE, AND NEVER SAY A NICE THING ABOUT ANY ONE, ALWAYS NASTY RUDE, AND SARCASTIC, IS IT THE DOOR THE MOUTH IS OPEN TO THE DEVIL, AND HE IS USING THE MOUTH NOT ONLY TO DESTROY YOU, BUT IN DESTRUCTION AND TEARING DOWN ANOTHER. DON'T LIKE THE TRUTH. BIBLE IS THE TRUTH.

:) IN ALL FAIRNESS AND LOVE, IT IS WRONGE TO JUDGE SOMEONE. I WILL SAY THIS HOWEVER, I USED TO SMOKE WHILE I WAS IN NURSING SCHOOL, ALONG WITH THE OTHER'S, I KIND OF WAS THE ONLY ONE WITH MAYBE A FEW OTHERS, WHO DIDN'T SMOKE, WHEN WE WENT OUT FOR THE BREAK INBETWEEN CLASSES. PEER PRESSURE, WHETHER IT'S SMOKING, DRINKING, WHAT EVER, CAN SUCK YOU INTO IT. WHEN I WAS PREGNANT WITH MY SECOND DAUGHTER, I DID CHAIN SMOKE FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS. I KNEW IT WASN'T GOOD AND PRAYED AND FINALLY DID QUIT, FOR THE FACT THAT I WAS CARRYING A CHILD. EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS A NURSING STUDENT THAT SAID, SMOKING DOSN'T STUNT THE GROWTH, BECAUSE HER MOTHER SMOKED ALL THROUGH OUT HER MANY PREGNANCIES, AND ALL HER CHILDREN WERE NEARLY 6 FOOTERS. AFTER MY DAUGHTER WAS BORN, MAYBE A FEW HERE AND THERE, JUST OUT OF NERVOUS NESS OR STRESS, BUT I KNEW THAT THERE WAS SOMETHING INSIDE OF ME, EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS BIRTHED. SOMETHING LIVING, AND SOMETHING THAT I CHERISH AND LOVE, THE HOLY SPIRIT. FOR THAT FACT, OF THE LIVING PRESENCE WITHIN, I DID QUIT AND WITH PRAYER NEVER RETURNED TO IT. IT'S NO USE SAYING ALL KINDS OF BAD THINGS TO SOMEONE ABOUT IT. BUT NOT TO ADDRESS ANY ONE, AN ADDICTION, A HABIT IS LIKE IT IS. PORNAGRAPHY IS AN ADDICTION , AND HABIT, A STRESS BUSTER FOR SOME. ESPECIALLY TO THOSE WHO ARE NOT MARRIED. YOU KNOW THAT VIEWING SEX STIMULATES AN AREA OF THE BRAIN, AS A DRUG. THE COLLAGES HAVE COMPUTORS, WHERE THE GUYS ON THE BREAK, INDULGE IN WATCHING SOME FEMALES IN SCANT UNDER GARMENTS, NOT NECESSARILY PORN, BUT AN ESCAPE. WHAT IS AN ADDICTION, A BONDAGE TO SOMETHING. JESUS CAME TO SET THE CAPTIVE FREE. WITHOUT JUDGING ANOTHER, THE CHOICE ULTIMATELY BELONGS TO THE PERSON. IF YOU ARE IN CONTROL, THAN THE THINGS DOSN'T HAVE YOU. THE DECISION NEEDS TO COME FROM THAT PERSON. THERE IS NOTHING IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD. WHETHER IT IS TO BREAK THE CHAINS OF SMOKING, OR OTHER ADDICTIONS. EACH ONE IS AT A DIFFERENT SPIRITUAL LEVEL THAN ANOTHER AND LETTING THE HOLY SPIRIT DO IT'S WORK, IS HIS JOB, NOT OURS. SORRY FOR ANY HARSH WORDS. MAY THE LORD BLESS, STRENGTEN, AND LEAD EVERY SMOKER, NO ONE SHOULD BE COMPARED TO ANOTHER, EVERYONE IS PRECIOUS AND VALUED IN GOD'S SIGHT, AND WHAT HE'S DONE FOR SOME , HE CAN DO FOR ANOTHER. :)

YOU REALLY HAVE A HEART OF GOLD. AFTER READING SOME OF THIS, YOU REMAIN, LOVING, AND UNCRICTICAL. BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE. THAT'S WHY, SOMETIMES SAYING ONE'S OPIONIONS ISN'T ALWAYS RIGHT. IT IS NOT OUR ANSWERS THAT COUNT, IT'S THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT'S THAT DO. THIS IS WHY I WAS CONVICTED TO COME BACK AND REPENT. :)

I AM NOT ALWAYS RIGHT OFM. AND REPENT TO SAYING PEOPLE ARE NOT BELEIVERS WHO SMOKE. SO PLEASE FORGIVE ME, I THINK I WAS NOT IN THE RIGHT FRAME OF MIND. OFM WHAT ABOUT ALL THE FAT AND GRESSE PEOPLE PUT INTO THEIR BODIES, AND THE OTHER JUNK. BOTTOM LINE, I DON'T WANT TO MAKE A JUDGEMENT ANYMORE ABOUT THIS. MY STEP FATHER SMOKED LIKE 2 PACKS A DAY.

I don’t see how it could be that smoking cigarettes is not a sin. It has never represented a life dedicated to God. It even makes you stink. I was addicted for over 20 years. It was terrible. I thought I could choose not to smoke any time, and I couldn’t. For many years I quit every single night, truly quit and thought the Lord would help me. I started again every day. One day I walked five blocks in 20 below zero weather because there was no cigarette in the house, even in any upholstery or pocket. I only stopped smoking when a group of spiritually mature ladies interceded with the Lord for me.

The problem is what are we going to do about those poor addicted people? What would Christ have us do about them? There are people who won’t come to church because of the way they smell of cigarettes, when they want to come to worship and learn more of our Savior.

:) I DO SAY YOUR WORDS REDTENT ARE VERY WISE. I'M SO GLAD YOU FINALLY DID GET VICTORY OVER IT. SOMETIMES IT'S A CHOICE ALSO. WHEN I GO TO THE DELI THE COST OF THEM IS LIKE YOU COULD BUY 2 GALLONS OR MORE OF MILK FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY A WEEK ON ONE PACK. IT TAKES WISDOM AND INTERVENTION, PRAYER AND SUPPORT. THERE'S MANY THINGS IN LIFE THAT COULD CAUSE STRESS, ESPECIALLY IN TODAY'S TIMES. JESUS HELP EVERYONE WHO NEEDS HELP WITH THIS.

I think the addiction is what makes it a sin...not the cigarette itself.

Although smoking cigarettes in my opinion is a way for the devil to get at the inward man,by first

influencing a persons mind to think worldly,carnal-(five senses)things that they can

see, taste, hear, smell or feel.then once he gets you to desire that cigarette from the inside, then he has

a stronghold.Although i don't believe he can touch the spirit,he can get you to desire to sin in your

body, and attempt to make you feel condemned,by doing what he has set up.

The bible says that if you know to do right and you don't do it,it is sin
and since we know that cigarettes are bad then we should not smoke, not that you will go to hell for it,but the devil will try to kill you.
Romans 14:23And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin. 2 Corinthians 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
1 Corinthians 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
2 Corinthians
21Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;

22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit king james version on all scriptures.

Were do we draw the line here people, happy meals are sins too because they alter ones mood, they are extremely horrible for your health, and some people can't live one day without one, so seriously folks.....we could what if this to death and get no where, lets just follow Christ as humanly as possible and ask daily for forgiveness and repent fully, and to always escape temptation when it arises. I used to chew tobacco for like 5 years I asked the almighty to break me of that horrid addiction and one day I got the flu I got better then after a week of the flu I had not had one dip so I just said well what the heck might as well take advantage of it hehe and yeah.
