I was speaking with an atheist friend about my faith today and at one point in the conversation, while I was explaining what the bible says about salvation, he asked me a question. The question was "why should I care about what the bible says" I said because its the word of God. He then said" how do I know"?"how do I know the Koran or Hindu scripture not the real word of God'. I tried to explain but I don't think he was convinced at all. My question is how do we know that the Bible is from God, i would like to have better answers for him next time we talk.

Ultimately, we have to place our trust in an extra-biblical source, or Tradition. If you can trust that God guides His Church and protects them error, especially when determining which books are inspired and which are not, then you're on the right track.

Otherwise, the only answer is 'I don't know'.
