Listen, besides the hundreds of huge telescopes manned by professionals, there are thousands, tens of thousands of people who watch the sky religiously through their own. (If you discover a comet you can have it named after you.)
If a huge asteroid or a comet was headed for earth, there would be many people from various parts of the globe talking about it.
- You would hear chatter all over the web.

So the 'comet' caused a certain river in a certain part of the world to be flooded with with either red algae or red sand?
Red tide is a common occurrence at certain times of year on the northern lip of the gulf of mexico.
No comets, just algae.
