Who was talking about porn?
Some "artistic" movies and music videos are full of pornographic content.

Re: Fornication & Adultery are abominations! If you support them, you're not a Christ

I don't think it is in the best interest of anyone to assume that all are brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ here who simply need a tap in the shoulder and a guiding hand to lead them in the right direction. I wish to God that was the case. I would even be happy if that was the case with most Christians.

Sadly, most are more likely to bite the hand that points them away from their sin and/or comfort and towards Jesus Christ. Most are those who need a trumpet to wake them or they shall immediately return back to their slumber if you tap them and, with a smile, say "It's time to wake up."

I am a firm believer that there is a time and a place for everything. I almost perished in my sin because people assumed I was a Christian simply because I was going to church. I was a drunken frat boy backslidden Christian who quite obviously needed help but nobody wanted to sound the alarm.

Love isn't always being soft-spoken or gentle. That is why Jesus said "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten."

Ya know?

Re: Fornication & Adultery are abominations! If you support them, you're not a Christ

What gets missed in all of this is the HYPOCRISY. It is far to easy to pick the one or two sins that MOST people will never be involved in. "Those people are especially UNCLEAN. They are MORE wicked then what I have ever done." "They are WORSE sinners then I am" Yet many other sins which ARE FAR MORE COMMON and socially ACCEPTABLE are swept UNDER the table. Like gossip. Which is false witness against your neighbor, and is a LIE and GOD HATES LIES. Yet how often is it ever preached on? By the way LIARS will NOT enter the kingdom of heaven EITHER.
I don't think is hypocrisy...
I think the fact that people do not equalize adultery with homosexuality is because in their minds, homosexuality is not only a sin, but also something unnatural.

If you try to target one sin, you are called a hypocrite because all sins are equal, but if you try to tackle them all at once you are probably just going to end up preaching about forgiveness. Fornication and adultery are not uncommon at all. Most Christians acknowledge that gossip is wrong, and stealing, and murder, but because of secular media they have a sort of "soft spot" for fornication and adultery because they saw in some movie that those things lead to a happy ending.

Re: Fornication & Adultery are abominations! If you support them, you're not a Christ

Tintin, I agree that most non-denom churches have a lot in common, but we lack (and enjoy lacking!) the hierarchy that comes with a denomination such as the LCMS. And non-denom churches can certainly range from quite liberal to very conservative. Mine is decidedly on the conservative end.

But we're off topic.

To return, let me ask you, is it loving to ignore a Christian brother's lifestyle of sin? Isn't it better to call them out on it (like Ecclesiatik said earlier)? Some people need to be hit over the head!

And was it loving (i.e. gentle) when Jesus turned the tables over in the Temple? Or when He called the Pharisees hypocrites?

We each have our own style of evangelism. My sister and I are completely different. I'm more of the "call 'em as I see 'em" type while she is more subtle. We're both sharing the Good News, but in different ways. And people respond to both styles. I've been told that my frankness is refreshing. So there you have it!

In response to the "homosexuality" thread, here's this one. You may say to yourself, "well, I don't participate in that behavior, so that doesn't apply to me." Oh, really? How many of you have "Christian" friends who have slept together before marriage or co-habitated before marriage? (BTW, that USED to be called "living in sin.") Did you called them out on it or did you quietly shake your head and say nothing?

And how many of you watch TV shows that promote this behavior? Or movies? If you watch that stuff, you tacetly promote that behavior.

Fornication and adultery have become "normalized" in today's culture. But we can fight culture by leading pure lives.
Homosexuality is a sin, but it is hypocritical to condemn it if you are going to give your blessing to fornication.

hi there. the only problem i see so far (i haven't read the whole thread) is what would it look like when it's your turn to be "called out". i can already guarantee you live a more godly life than i do based on what you wrote and i want to do better every day. but honestly, i think i'll wait until i'm further along in holiness before i attend your church:) i don't need to be beaten over the head about my sin.

You shouldn't wait until it's your turn to be "called out". Get rid of your sin today. Sin is a cancer that will kill you. Don't play around with it. Don't treat it like a game. Get rid of it today before it drives you to the grave. You can't have one hand on Jesus and one hand on the world and sinful pleasures. Choose this day who you will serve. It is literally a choice between life and death.

God bless.

Re: Fornication & Adultery are abominations! If you support them, you're not a Christ

MsSpratt -- I've been called out on more than one occasion -- not with adultery and fornication, but with other sins. Yes, it's hurtful when you're called out, but it's a good kind of hurt -- like lancing a boil or popping a zit. You can't heal when the infection is still in you. And you become ashamed because you know you've made God unhappy. It's not a good feeling, but it IS good to recognize the sin, repent and work at never doing it again. And I've got a lot more years on you, MsSpratt -- just continue to work on your own personal holiness and you'll be on the right track.

BTW, my church is NOT full of perfect people. We're filled with sinners who keep each other on track.

hey there santuzza:)
i appreciate your authority as an older woman, and am happy to discuss it with you:).
but i don't need people to call me out on my sin. God's words do that when i read them or hear them. the Spirit lets me know even when i am not reading or hearing. i'm not lacking awareness of my sins.

Mr Ecclesiastik, thank you for your advice, also. i have not been a christian very long. i "got rid of" lots of my sin right away but i'm not going to pretend i can just "get rid of" all my sin today.

i will keep close to Jesus and keep asking for his help. he didn't die and then get raised up to turn around and hit me over the head. i trust he will help me.

thanks, both of you:)

No problem. I got rid of lots of sin as a baby Christian as well but some took longer than others. I'm just telling it like it is. Jesus loves us but He does not tolerate sin. If you are referring to willful sin such as pornography, fornication, drinking in excess, & etc. you can get rid of them today. It is more a matter of if you desire your sin more than you desire Jesus Christ. I understand there are other more general sins that some people can struggle with for a while (greed, lust, etc.) that are longer battles as a whole. But if you are actively using your body to sin and are saying you cannot stop today because well that would just be unreasonable to ask a young Christian, then you are wrong my friend.

Jesus died for us. How can we still live for the things that put Jesus on the cross?

i don't view pornography or like it. i am not engaged in sexual activity, and i don't drink in excess.
but our minds are connected to our bodies and whether you act on greed or coveting or not, you're still sinning, and using your body to do it...the deadliest part of the body, the mind. i would think. idk. isn't that true?

when i read the bible, i read about sins like not doing things i should be doing. helping people without any expectation of anyone knowing or reward or whatever. and things like vanity - yes, i wonder if my hair looks nice.:( things like that.
those things bother me more than the fact that i'm struggling to give up smokes or if i cuss at the guy in the dodge that cut me off today. i admit it to Jesus right away anyways and tell him i'm sorry. i know i have to work on all of it.

and yes, sometimes i do make excuses not to do things i should do, or to do things i shouldn't. i'm pretty sure everybody does. it doesn't make it right, but it's true.

Sounds like you're doing great MsSpratt! Keep it up!

But, believe it or not, there are "back-sliding" Christians who are not as in tune to the Holy Spirit as you are. And oftentimes, those folks need to be hit over the head with their sin. Everybody is different!

Yes ma'am, you still are using your body but not in the same context that I meant. I meant more of the context where Paul, in Scripture, says that every sin is committed outside of the body except those who engage in sexual immorality sin against their own body (1Corinthians 6:18). There are further explanations but I do not think they are that important right now.

What I do think is important is that you seem to be doing well. You worried me at first because I considered it a possibility that you were struggling with sexual immorality as a new believer and were possibly making excuses for it. I realize now that is not true.

I also realize the other things are not good either but I'm glad you are working on them.

God bless
