Yes you can add friends by clicking the persons' picture/avatar and going to "Be friend" which is somewhere on the rightside of the profile page. 
You will get use to it, believe me. There's also different rooms when you go into the chat rooms...clicking the rooms button will give you different room options. And as always Pink =girl and Boy=blue for the buddy icon things. I can help you if you have anymore questions
