Just something I nicked from my profile because I'm feeling lazy and cake is on the way 
Proverbs and Psalms are a must for Christians. At least once a day I read a few Proverbs and every afternoon give over just a little time of thought a Psalm.
By far my favourite Bible Verse is Matthew 26:36 -46 when Jesus prays in Gethsemane. I feel more connected with Him reading these verses. To read how frightened and upset He was at the coming time where He would take on all sin. You can truely read it in His words. Prayer is often strongest after giving these verses thought.
I believe to have an understanding of what is involved in following Christ comes straight from Him.
Jesus telling us the two greatest commandments being to love our heavenly father and our neighbors and His last commandment given to love others as He loved us. Obviously His last speaks volumes as to how we are to love others.
That would be the very basic idea of my idea of following Christ.
