IMPRISONED
Coral Gathman Cook
Like great prison walls
My sins rise up around me
And my failures like barricades
Pen me in
The silences of God's great Heaven
Vex me sore
And to all of this
What can I say?
I do not know what I shall do
With all this despair within
Nor yet how I can live
With such intensities of pain
My days seem numbered now
More than before
Not by design of man
Nor of myself
But by the poison
Flowing deep within
I am imprisoned there
Trapped like a wretched beast
Within a cage
And there is no help in sight
The bondage of death
Works within me
Upon life's weighty matters
And it will not be escaped!
