Carson, Fiorina launch 2016 bids as diversity of GOP field grows

The GOP presidential field grew by two Monday as retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and former technology executive Carly Fiorina both announced they are running for president.

The two new candidates enter a quickly expanding GOP field as Democrats get off to a relatively slow start, with another Republican -- former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee -- set to make his announcement on Tuesday. Together, Carson and Fiorina add to the diversity on the Republican side; Fiorina is the first, and possibly only, female Republican in the race, while Carson is the first black candidate of either party to enter the campaign.
Carson/Fiorina, Huckabee/Fiorina, Carson/Huckabee, Fiorina/Carson, Fiorina/Huckabee, Huckabee/Carson -- all those sound good to me.

The GOP field is wildly diverse. Not just Fiorina and Carson. We have to consider Cruz and Rubio. If Jindal decides to run, that will add another ethnic background in the hopper. Young people? We've got those too. Even some of our White guys are young.

I hate this game though. We're Americans. When will we live up to our rhetoric of racial equality and equality between the races and sexes? That means one's race or sex should not be a positive or negative factor in deciding their qualifications for running for and holding office.

To paraphrase the recall slogan a few years ago- I stand with Walker even though he is a boring white man.
