This story is one that is a MUST READ for everyone. It is not too long but really makes a great point about those with a penchant for trying to make everything they disagree with "Biblical."

My Take: The danger of calling behavior ‘biblical’:

If ONLY North Americans Christians would start taking the advice of the above link. I am a little bit more hopeful these days because of young people. I am seeing smarter, more mature Christianity coming from Young people. Even forums like this!

Here is the problem with all Christianity that formed from protestantism. It's gotten to the stage where you have done away completely with the tradition of the fathers. The priests in the Orthodox and Catholic Churches were advisers to the largely illiterate Christian Community. Yes, there was corruption, like there are in all churches from time to time, but it was generally agreed that 'debates' and 'teachings' were settled by the priest.

These days, any Jack Handy with a 9th grade education can give an opinion on the bible.

It's become a big mess of conflicts and arguments, and politicians use the buzz words to further their agendas.

Education has very little to do with knowing God's word. It is the Holy Spirit. The problem many fall
into is relying on their edcuation and own abilities to determine doctrine. A highly educated atheist,
who has a PhD in Biblical studies, can be dwarved mentally, by a high school drop out, who relys on
the Holy Spirit.

Unfortunately, Rachel Held Evans is not very good at reading comprehension. Some of her complaints are legitimate, but much of it is a giant strawman.

She also demonstrates an unfortunate ignorance of scripture.

1 Corinthians 1:26-31
26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.
30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

True, but I was referring to more a basic level.

You need an education to be literate - ie Read.

But then further on you need to understand how to read and evaluate ideas in literature. Meaning, context.

Then of course the Bible contains Philosophy, Parables, historical accounts.

So the Bible is sophisticated and requires a sophisticated ability to read properly.

I don't think you need a Phd, but it's probably a skill that the majority of the population simply doesn't have. Especially since everyone watches tv these days and are not active readers.

If you get what I mean?

The Word is written on our hearts, when we seek we will find. don't need to be a genius, to get to know the Father. Jesus told us the truth is simple, it can be understood by children.

This came to mind

Acts 4

3Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. 14And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. 15But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, 16Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it. 17But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. 18And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. 19But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. 20For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. 21So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done. 22For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shewed.

Yes -- while she does make a good point about how easily people sometimes "pull out the bible card" - she is quite incorrect about all of the different things she declares are contained in "the biblical model"...

Just because something is recorded in the bible as having happened in the past - does not necessarily mean that it is actually part of the "biblical model" message. The Bible is also a history book.

The "biblical model" is real - and actually speaks to every issue -- just not in the simple way that [all] people (by default) like to have everything handed to them - without them having to make an effort...

A proper understanding of "what is and is not" contained in the "biblical model" takes effort - reading, reflection, study, listening to the Holy Spirit...

Some people seem to think that there should be "a single verse in the Bible" (and only one) that speaks directly to any given imaginable issue or situation. ("Sorry, it does not work that way.")

During her "yearlong experiment" - I believe that she "focused" too much on the [surface-level] "mechanics" of what she thought was the "biblical model" while virtually ignoring the [underlying] "workings" of it.

:)

@GRA

I think the only point she really proves, is how ignorant of scripture she is. That, and how rebellious she is to what God has established.
