Okay so I read the whole new testament (excluding revelations) and I loved it. I found it to be 100% correct (if that makes sense). I loved Jesus and what the whole thing stood for...

Now I have read all of genesis... And the bible seemed to have given me a new God... and after reading half of exodus I am now struggling to read the bible... I can only read a few verses at a time... When in the old testament I had to force myself to put it down...

The God it depicts seems so very different from the one the new testament depicts... The old testament seems to be full of vengeance, war, trickery, and His people... The new testament seems as if God took a few too many happy pills and is now about Love... It is like God went to Vietnam and served as a G.I. during the war he was filled with hate rage and napalm... But now when he came back home he became a hippy...

I know I have only read one and a half books... But It seems as if God is completely different from the one I know...

Hi T_Laurich:
The old testament is the old covenant with the Israelites and the new testament is the New covenant which teaches the love of Jesus Christ our redeemer. God told me that I must choose as we still may choose between the Old and the New but we cannot take from both. He said that if I were to take any one part of the OT then I would be judged by the entire OT which only stands to reason as in the business world except in our world the old is done away with and the new replaces it.
If you are very new I would suggest staying in the NT until you are well grounded in His teachings. Remember when opening the Bible to pray for the authors guidance to open your heart and your eyes so you may see.
There are some awesome Bible studies out there but I don't know if I am allowed to post links on this site as I am new to this group but pray that He will guide you and He will.
When my husband was very ill before we found out He was terminal I was so lost and overwhelmed so I just kept talking with God but not really knowing what to say as the experience was so new to both my husband and I. I used to leave him at the hospital for a couple of days sometimes so I could take care of bills, shopping and others necessities or just to rest and when I went to see him at the hospital on one of these days I came across a bible tract. I glanced through it and it was about things I had been asking God about. I asked the nurse if they were for taking and she said she didn't know where it came from because they were not allowed to have religious material there so as not to offend the different religions.
Trust Him to lead you and He certainly will.

God's no different. But before Jesus and the Holy Spirit came, WE were different. God had to relate to us differently, and treat us differently, to get us ready for what we have now. Compare your parents telling you, when you were 5, never to cross the street on your own, to how you get around now.

Read it as if it's all happening inside you right now.

If they were meant to be stories about other people only, God's word couldn't "come to you".

BibleGateway.com - Keyword Search: word of the lord came to

Means they found their own predicament in a pre-existing text and it put their current struggle in perspective.
Sometimes they got an answer, a commendation, a warning to repent, instructions on how to proceed, etc.

In the OT we God separated from His creation by sin. God calls out a people and calls to them to serve Him. They do not and even though they are judged and restored many times they are still far from Him.
In the NT we see God reconciling them to Himself by providing the perfect sacrifice for sin. The gulf that sin created has been bridged by Christ. We are now called to serve by love not by duty.
The OT looked for the coming Messiah and that faith was rewarded buy the imputation of righteousness. In the NT we look back at the cross and by believing in Christ we are imputed the righteousness of Christ. All in all the whole of Gods word points to Christ and the blood atonement God provided, an everlasting atonement for sin.

For the cause of Christ

I had the same problem and when I prayed and asked God with sincerity to show me the truth, I started putting it together. Remember This scripture in the New Testament?
Colossians 1:12-18 (KJV)
[SUP]12 [/SUP]Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
[SUP]13 [/SUP]Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
[SUP]14 [/SUP]In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
[SUP]15 [/SUP]Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
[SUP]16 [/SUP]For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
[SUP]17 [/SUP]And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
[SUP]18 [/SUP]And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
If you read again in Genesis, you will see that Jesus talked with Abraham. It says they are Angels, it can be confusing, but God is not the author of confusion. Remember that the Bible has been translated several times, but God will give you understanding. Then re-read Hebrews chapter 11 again. Hebrews and Leviticus go hand in hand.

There is a reason it is called OLD Testament and NEW Testament.
The Old Testament is the Old covenant
The New Testament is the New covenant.
They are different, different rules, different laws, different ways to be Saved.
Under the Old Testament a person was saved by obedience to the Laws of Moses (600+ of them)
Under the New Testament a person is Saved by and through Jesus Christ and what He and His Apostles tells us to do.

To better grasp and separate them, think of it like this. The New Testament is instructions for a Christian to live by, it is the way of life for a True Christian. The Old Testament is Historical data and prophetical data that is yet to come, it is not instructions on how a Christian is to live, it was indeed instructions on how the Israelites were suppose to live, that is True, but they Failed, so that covenant was taken away from them, and now we have a new covenant, one which even the Gentiles can be Saved. Any question feel free to email me, but please be patient with me, i answer email in the order that i receive them, so it may take a few days or a couple of weeks to get to yours.

Anyone who does not know Jesus is always worse off than anyone who does. Anyone who knows Jesus and still behaves like he does not know Him is definitely (just plain) worse.

They are the same God, God does not change. It just takes time to study and read. I dont see where the trickery is that your talking about ? God is always fair and just and everything people do they bring it on themselves mostly from not taking or asking for God's advice.

Read Ezekiel here, God speaks here shows that His ways are just.

Ezekiel 18

King James Version (KJV)

18 The word of the Lord came unto me again, saying,

2 What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?

3 As I live, saith the Lord God, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.

4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

5 But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,

6 And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman,

7 And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;

8 He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,

9 Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord God.

10 If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things,

11 And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour's wife,

12 Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,

13 Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.

14 Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father's sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like,

15 That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour's wife,

16 Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,

17 That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.

18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.

19 Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.

20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.

23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.

25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?

26 When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.

27 Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.

28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

29 Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?

30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord God. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.

Exactly. If you believe that the God of the OT is different than the God of the NT, then you have 2 different Gods. And according to God's or Jesus' instructions, you then are guilty of idolatry by following even some of the teachings of 2 different Gods.

Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? That's because,

Excellent point!

I too had trouble reconciling the 2 seemingly different Gods. It really helped me to set aside what I read and understood about Jesus and New Testament for a season in order to read and study the Old Testament. Why? Because it gave me an opportunity to know the culture and the lifestyle Jesus and His contemporaries lived with. To know the God that Jesus served. To know what that God was like, and to see how Jesus truly was His Son and did everything that His Father commanded. Once had a perspective of THAT God, Jesus and the New Testament made so much more sense to me, and vice versa.

hey you know whats really cool? almost every thing in the old testament foreshadows Jesus Christ. Always think about Jesus and his nature and the things he did because a lot of things in the old testament symbolize Jesus. There are also a lot of prophecies.

Matthew 13:15For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’

Matthew 19:8
Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.

They had lacked understanding in them days until Jesus has unleashed his spirit to all those wanted a change. Since His spirit was spread among those who desired righteousness, their descendants has evolved from fools ( and they all were considered to be fools) to civilize people, but there are some of us that is pretending to be civilize. But Jesus teachings has produce a nice crop and which the laws had produce nothing. So it shows that gentleness is better than harshness.

Matthew 13:8
Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.

Matthew 21:32
For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.

Matthew 22:16
They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are.

John 14:6
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

The Old Testament was recorded first. If I had it to do over again I would have read the Old Testament first. It would have been so much better for understanding. Sad thing is that most churches today teach almost exclusively out of the New Testament, and that can be to a new Christians disadvantage sometimes.

Not really. On what did you base your conclusion that the NT is "100% correct"?

The God [the OT] depicts seems so very different from the one the new testament depicts...
.....
It seems as if God is completely different from the one I know...
It might help your understanding of what you're reading to keep in mind that the OT refers to the tribal-national "God" of Israel as that God is worshiped in Judaism, the monotheistic religion of the Jews. The NT refers to Jesus of Nazareth who, since the first days of Judeo-Christianity (an offshoot of Judaism), was believed to be the messianic "Son of God" who would remove the Roman occupiers from Israel and restore its' ancient power and glory (Matt. 1:16; John 1:41-49; 6:14-15; 7:40-44, etc.).

The Jesus of the NT, following his apotheosis by the Christian church at Rome (his deification/promotion to the status of a "God," similar to the apotheosis of an ancient Roman Emperor, and even George Washington) is, according to the Roman Church's "Doctrine of the Trinity," one and the same as the God of the OT (John 10:30; 1 John 5:7-8, and the like).

Think of Jesus as you will, but whether Jesus is or is not either the Messiah promised to Israel by their God OR the God the OT are issues which are still heavily debated to this day.
