The Abbey Garden
by Me

I once had the chance to meet

A monk who seemed quite ascetic,
He projected no ere of conceit,
I admit to being quite the skeptic,
But I did not think his life pathetic,
He enjoys an internal reward,
For he escapes the life of the hectic,
And he draws nearer the Lord.

The monastery seemed obsolete,
Men behaving so domestic,
Walking around in bare feet,
But the garden did look majestic,
And the cheese-making I'll give credit,
The monk says not a word,
By some vow to be authentic,
And he draws nearer to the Lord.

We sat on a park bench in the heat,
He gave me a card and I read it,
Its words: Jesus—ask, knock seek,
The moment felt so electric,
Suddenly I began to get it,
His ways a monument to the God he adored,
For me, you, and the heretic,
To draw us nearer to the Lord.
